Chris’s eyes go wide as he brushes his hands off before placing them on my bare knees.
“I spent so long being mad at her. I didn’t know he was treating her badly. She’s safe now, though.” I swipe at a tear before it can fall.
“She’s moving forward. I think you two will be closer after this.”
I offer a watery smile. “Me, too. She found a job she likes and wants to spend some time out here when she’s earned some vacation.”
“Can’t wait to meet her.”
We put away the food, thankfully no bears to worry about this time, and lay side by side in the tent, watching the little orbs of blue light sway gently in the drafts of the old house.
“Hey, Chris?”
“Hmm?”
“I’m cold.”
“Want me to find some more blankets?”
“Nope.” There’s trouble in my tone.
“We’re supposed to be having sex indifferentrooms of the house, Annie.” I hear the zip of his sleeping bag as he extricates himself from the fabric.
“Yeah…but this feels like the most important space. Besides, there’s no hurry.”
He covers my mouth with a slow, lazy kiss.
“No hurry at all.”
