“Let’s go back to bed. I will call Colt in the morning. We will figure this out. I will do everything I can to keep you safe.”

She softened a little at my words but still didn’t say anything. This guy was going to greater lengths than ever before. Very few people knew we were here this weekend, but somehow this creep knew and even made sure that she knew that he did too.

As the silence stretched on, I could almost hear the thoughts bubbling up inside her head. Her hands trembled as they rested on my chest.

“How about a movie? It might be hard to sleep now, but maybe we can watch something together for a little bit?” I offered, thinking she needed a distraction.

“Yeah, that sounds good.” She walked over to sit on her bed while I grabbed the remote. I sat down next to her, and she scowled at me.

“What do you think you’re doing?”

I gave her my charming smile. “I’m sitting next to you. It’d be weird if I sat over there to watch a movie with you. Plus, I want to be close to you. Just shut up and let me.”

“Fine.” She rolled her eyes.

“What did I say about rolling your eyes?” My voice was teasing, but I was only half-joking.

She threw a pillow at me—her attempt to lighten the mood. I smiled and looked back at the TV, scrolling through the options. I clicked on one and looked at herquestioningly. “This one just started. I know you hate watching movies that have already started.”

“Why would I want to watch a movie when I missed the first thirty minutes? That is the entire setup!” she said.

“I think I just fill in the blanks, I guess?” I chuckled.

“Yeah.” She drew out the vowel sound. “That’s a no from me.”

We sat in silence, intently watching the movie. I ignored how she was so close, yet so far away. I could feel the heat radiating off her, but she never inched closer. Whenever I glanced at her, she would smile before bringing her attention back at the screen.

It was a good thing I had seen the movie before because I had no idea what was going on. All I could think about was the few inches of distance that separated her hand from mine.

A few hours later, light streamed through the windows as I pulled the body next to me closer. Dotty let out a sleepy moan.

Shit.

We had fallen asleep in her bed. Together.

My attempt at playing it cool and trying to win her over slowly went out the fucking window apparently, but I couldn’t bring myself to move. Her sleeping body was warm against mine. Our legs were intertwined, and her back rested against my chest. I nuzzled her neck, holding back a moan as I inhaled her scent.

I was so fucking gone for her.

I mean, who the fuck would sniff their childhood best friend’s neck while lying in the same bed as them?

Apparently, me.

Dotty squirmed against me, sending a jolt straight to my dick. She nuzzled into me for a moment, but then I could tell the exact moment she regained consciousness. She stilled and went to pull away.

I grabbed her waist and pulled her back to me. Every time I was around her, I surprised myself with how much I needed to be closer to her.

“Stay. Just for a minute.” My voice was barely above a whisper.

She didn’t move for a moment but then settled back into me. Unable to resist touching her even more, my hand traced idle circles around her waist.

“How did you sleep?” she asked. I had no doubt that the barrier of not being face-to-face made it easier for her to talk to me, but I wanted to see her face, so I nudged her to turn around.

The moment she faced me, it was as if someone punched me right in the gut, knocking the wind out of me. Sleepy Dotty was always adorable. I had watched her stumbling around my house early in the morning, looking for caffeine, but seeing her now, in my arms, so close, I couldn’t help myself.

“I know you said friends…” I started.

“Trent.” Her soft blue eyes did not match her stern tone, but I couldn’t resist.
