Wyatt agrees that one or two bikers could have survived and I think he’s anxious to get to the bottom of this before something worse happens. We’re lucky that Zayna and Keyshawn made it out alive.
I’ve never beento Ruger’s little place in the woods. I know he built it with his own two hands, he has a dog named Zeus, and he hates visitors.
“Where is Eden right now?” I ask, even if it’s risky asking Ruger any questions about his first daughter. He’s fiercely andirrationally protective of her and defensive of any potential criticism.
“Zayna says she was staying nearby with Damara. Tamiya’s sister is staying with them for a while.”
“Everything good with her?”
Ruger glares. “I’m a good father.”
“Never suggested otherwise.”
“Zayna pisses me off,” he mutters, turning his anger towards the door. “She could have been killed or raped or something.”
“She’s fine. That’s all that matters.”
“She’spregnant,” Ruger says through a jaw clenched so tight it looks like he’s about to crack his own face open. “That’s my baby in her womb, and she can’t just run around with her like that.”
“Her?”
“Yes,” he says. “What about you? Boy or girl.”
“We don’t know yet.”
“Why not?”
“You know women. They love gender reveal parties.”
“I don’t even want to know what the fuck that is.”
Ruger knockson the front door, as if the women could have missed the insane noise of his reckless riding, and opens it to Zayna, who leaps into his arms, screaming his name.Let’s hope she never does that in an airport…
I nearly bowl them over as I push past to see Keyshawn for the first time. She looks terrified when she sees me. I can’t form any words or any sensible thoughts. Gravity pulls meinto Keyshawn’s arms and I feel her baby bump against mine and her perfect warmth as she slips into my arms.
Zayna’s back thuds against the wall as Ruger begins kissing her in the entryway of their home, like he’s on fucking camera. I place a finger under Keyshawn’s chin and slowly draw her lips to mine. I can’t rush this. My body shudders with how overstimulated I feel just from touching her.
Her lips are so fucking perfect. I don’t want to stop kissing, but soon, I have to, because Ruger rudely separates us so he can walk through, holding Zayna’s wrist as he drags her into their kitchen.
“Excuse me…” I grunt.
“Sorry,” Ruger says. “I need whiskey and I’m not letting this creature out of my sight until she tells me exactly why the fuck she blew up your house.”
“Pour me a shot.”
“I’m drinking a bottle,” Ruger says. “But I have plenty of Hollingsworth whiskey to go around. None for the women.”
Keyshawn slips her hand into mine, gazing up at me with such nervous uncertainty that I wonder if my biggest fears have come true – this entire experience has given her second thoughts.
“I’m glad you’re safe,” I say to her reassuringly, but she just looks… sad.
I lean over and whisper into her ear, “You know I want to marry you, right?”
I clearly didn’t whisperthat quietly.
“It’s true,”Zayna says. “I picked out a puppy for you and everything.”
“A puppy?” Keyshawn asks, perking up.
