“You were at my show?”

I shook my head. “No, but I check your social media. I also bought a few of your pieces over the years.”

“Why are you telling me this?” Ashlyn questioned with narrowed eyes. “You’re the one that left this family only thinking about herself.”

Ashlyn’s purse buzzed, and before I could answer her, she pulled out her phone. “I need to take this.” And my sister left the room.

I should have known my sister would be stubborn. I grabbed the drink from the end table and tilted my head back. The buzz of the alcohol didn’t do anything to help the frustration I felt. How could my sister be this upset I left the family?

The drink was a little stronger than I’d expected. The world spun, and I laid my head back against the couch.

“She’s in here,” Quinton’s voice cut through the fog.

My eyes felt like they weighed a ton as I opened them to find my sexy man standing next to his brother. “Hey, you,” my words came out slurred. “I think the drink was a little too strong.”

One drink should not make me feel this sleepy.

Paxton lifted me into his arms.

“I need to get her home.”

I tried to open my mouth, but I was too tired.

“I think she was drugged.”

Oh, that didn’t sound good. And my brain was too foggy to scream the person’s name who did this. My own sister knocked me out with drugs at my party.

CHAPTER13

Paxton

Mia’s eyes finally opened as I held her close, all too aware of what could have happened. The drink had a fast-acting sedative. We hadn’t figured out who’d given her the cocktail—yet. “How do you feel?”

I slipped out of bed and grabbed a glass of water and two Tylenol. She held out her hand and I placed them in her open palm. “Well, I must give my sister credit for that one. I never thought she would drug me. So why?” A lone tear slipped down her cheek. “We used to be so close. I don’t understand why she hates me. I need to go talk to her and find out if she was the one who tried to kill me all those times.”

“Not tonight. Brock wanted me to call him when you woke up so he could come over and talk with you.”

She shook her head and sniffled. “This is…a family matter I need to take care of it myself.”

I raised my eyebrows. “From the way you spoke before, Brock is your family more than Ashlyn. How about I call him and get this over with? Then I can climb into bed and read you a chapter out of the book we started.”

She shook her head slowly. “Or you could climb in next to me and hold me.”

I slid into the bed next to her and kissed her lips softly. “I find myself unable to say no to you.”

She opened her mouth. I thought, she was about to deny my claim instead. Her lips found mine again and took my breath away.

I cupped her face in my hands and crushed my lips against hers. She gasped into my mouth as her lips slightly parted, and I ran my tongue along the seam. She tasted sweet like peppermint and sunshine. I struggled to compose myself and pulled back.

“Mia, you were drugged. We shouldn’t be doing this; you need to rest.”

She cocked her head to the side. “All the drug did was make me sleep. I need you, Paxton.” She leaned forward and captured my mouth. Mia purred into it, a sensation that caused every hair on my body to stand on end. She was my drug of choice, and I never wanted to let her go. I slid my hand along her side and cupped her ass, pulling her, so she was on top of me. She rubbed her sex against my cock and clicked her tongue against the roof of my mouth.

A low growl escaped from deep within my throat, and that was all it took for me to tug her shirt over her head. My cock was so hard it pushed against the zipper of my dress pants. All I could think about was burying it deep inside of her.

My lips trailed from her mouth down to her supple neck, where I nipped at the sensitive skin that met her shoulders.

“There are too many layers between us,” she whispered.
