I was about to respond when the doctor came into the waiting room to let us know Jessica was out of surgery and resting. I couldn’t hold it in anymore. I put my face in my hands and let the tears fall. For what happened to Jessica. For almost losing her.
They made me wait another couple of hours before I could go back and see her. They had her turned on her side, and she looked pale in her hospital bed. But she still looked so beautiful to me. When I sat down and grasped her hand, her eyes fluttered open, and she gave a slight smile.
“Brock,” she rasped. “Love you.”
I had to squeeze my eyes shut. I was overcome with emotion from everything that had happened. “I love you too. I’m so sorry for everything.”
Jessica’s eyes filled with tears. “Thank you for coming. I knew you would come for me.” Jessica blinked to get her eyes under control. “I’m sorry I ran. I realized too late that I was wrong.”
“No matter what happens, I will always be there for you.Always. But you will be getting a permanent tracker.”
Jessica was having a hard time keeping her eyes open. I knew I needed to let her sleep.
“Stay,” she whispered. “Please, stay.”
There was no place I would rather be than next to her forever.I would spend the rest of my days making up for what happened.
