“I’m learning to trust my instincts,” she says, picking up her spoon to taste her shrimp and sausage gumbo.

“That sounds nice,” she says with a nod as we continue walking. The path also leads away from the water, not that I won’t be able to protect her from stray swamp puppies.

The notes follow us as we walk, the jazz band showing no signs of slowing. People are still eating, listening and dancing to the music, which allows me to focus completely on the girl beside me.
