Sophia waved her hand at him. “I’ve got it. You can go. I’m sure you want to get home.”
Bobby turned to study her. “You sure?”
She nodded. There was no way she wanted Bobby here to witness whatever was going to happen between them. Noah didn’t seem cruel enough to come back just to tell her that he was leaving. But, she’d been wrong about a lot of things lately, so what did she know?
Bobby popped the trunk, and Sophia walked back to pull out her suitcase. Just as she moved to shut the trunk, Noah appeared, grabbing her suitcase.
“Let me,” he said. His voice was soft—unsure. Was he nervous?
Sophia just nodded, she was too exhausted from her night at the safe house. She didn’t have it in her to fight today. She waved to Bobby as he pulled out of her driveway, leaving her alone with Noah.
They walked into her house in silence. She glanced around, taking note of Noah’s tux hanging on a coat hook in the entryway. Butterflies took flight in her stomach, but she shushed them. What did that mean? Why was she allowing it to affect her? She needed to be strong. That was the only way she could survive his inevitable departure.
Sophia turned to Noah to face him head on. “So, Georgie was arrested?” If he was leaving, she wanted to get it over sooner rather than later.
Noah straightened. “He was. We were able to locate his ledger and take pictures. It had some pretty incriminating evidence. It didn’t take long to get a warrant for his arrest.”
Sophia nodded as she moved over to run her hand across the bookshelf on the far wall. “Great. I’m happy to hear that.” Then she glanced around. “Where is James?”
Noah leaned against the wall. He folded his arms and studied her. She could feel his gaze on her. It made her body flush from its intensity. “He’s under protection. There are going to be some unhappy followers who might want to enact revenge. He was able to stick a plea deal.”
Sophia smiled. That made her happy. Sure, her father had lived a criminal life, but he seemed to want to do better. He deserved a do over. Everyone did.
She allowed her gaze to fall back to Noah. He had a contemplative look. What was he thinking?
If he’d gotten everything he needed, why was he back?
“So, what can I do for you?” she asked as she folded her arms over her chest.
Noah straightened and took a few steps closer to her. Her breath caught in her throat as he approached.
“I need to tell you something.”
