Noah felt sick. He wanted to return to the past and refuse to ever come on this mission, to stay as far away from Sophia as possible. It was as if his worst fears were becoming a reality.

Noah stood next to James in silence. In order for Sophia to be safe, they needed to leave. Noah needed to leave. To break her heart. Again.

“That’s why I can’t be here. Why you can’t be here,” James said as he lifted his gaze to meet Noah’s.

“I know,” Noah said.

Movement in the hallway drew their attention. Sophia was standing there with tousled hair, hugging her chest. Her gaze was moving from Noah to James.

“Dad?” she whispered as she focused on her father.

James winced and then forced a smile. “Hey, Soph.”

Her face reddened as she hugged her chest tighter. “What are you doing here?”
