Noah was watching her. He had a contemplative expression on his face. Then he turned back to the ice cream tub. “Yeah. I do.”
The intensity of his gaze made her stomach lighten. He was serious. Sophia laughed. “One thing I know about James Lewis? He doesn’t care about me, and he certainly never cared about my mom or brother.” Just saying the words made her heart ache.
When Noah didn’t respond right away, Sophia glanced over at him.
“There’s a lot to a person that you don’t always see,” Noah said as he busied himself with scraping the side of the tub.
Sophia knew that they weren’t just talking about her dad. “You sound like you know a little about that.”
Noah was studying the countertop with a little too much intensity. She’d guessed right. She sighed and leaned back on her arm. “So, Noah, tell me what I don’t know.”
Noah didn’t meet her gaze. The silence between them was palpable. She wanted to push him. Ask him about what he was talking about. But he didn’t look like he’d talk, so she decided to drop it.
“I’m going to shower and get to bed. We have a long day tomorrow.” She winced as she realized how close their supposed wedding day was. Sure, they’d shown that they were physically compatible and, at times, emotionally. But Noah was giving her so much whiplash tonight, her head hurt.
Noah parted his lips like he wanted to say something more, but she just shook her head. “I think a good night of sleep would benefit us both.” Forcing a smile, she hoped he wouldn’t see the fear she was trying to hide.
Noah shifted his weight. “Okay.”
She hopped off the counter and set her spoon in the sink. When she got into the bathroom, she undressed and slipped into the shower to let the hot water run over her skin. She hoped that the tension would run down the drain with the water, but it didn’t. Nothing was going to make her feel better until she knew what Noah’s plans were.
Until then, she was going to be in this crappy limbo of uncertainty.
