“Owen Crosby just messaged me,” I tell Mila, my wide eyes meeting hers. She gapes, standing up quickly from her seat and rounding the coffee table to peer over my shoulder.

“Why”

“I think he’s trying to figure out why I picked him first.”

“Why did you?”

“I don’t know I just didn’t want to pick Leo this time.”

“Fuck.”

“Yeah.”

“Tell him you panicked.”

“I panicked and chose the person listed eighth and not the very first person on the list?”

“It’s probably been done before!”

I stare at her, thinking over my options. There’s absolutely no way I can tell him that I picked him simply because I think he’s hot and wanted him on my team.

Nope.

Never.

“Why did I agree to this?” I groan, sitting back on the couch and throwing my head into my hands.

“I can’t tell you that.” Mila sits beside me, placing her small hand on my shoulder.

“Okay, I got this.”

Picking up my phone, I breathe in deep as I open the app.

Cover 1, 2, 3, Let’s Go B?—

Yeah, Leo didn’t give me a lot of time to research before and you were the first Cobra on the list. I thought why not.

“See that wasn’t a horrible response!” Mila tells me, slapping me on the back.

Mission: Possible

Yeah, I can see that. Leo can be a little intense sometimes.

Oh yeah, he sure can be.

Mission: Possible

How did you meet him?

“He asked me how I met him,” I panic, my fist tightening at my side.

“Did Leo tell you anything about the guy you’re pretending to be?”

“The thing is, I don’t think this guy exists at all. All I know is that I’m supposed to pretend to be someone who works for the team.”

“Then that’s simple; just tell him you work with the team and met him in the hallway or something.”
