“I’ll deal with Payne. You don’t have to worry about him anymore.”
The woman looked like she wanted to ask another question but rubbed one of her temples. “My head hurts.”
“When the guy dropped you, you hit your head. There’s a little goose egg, but it didn’t break the skin. How’s your vision?” he asked.
She studied the wall behind him. “Good. No double vision.”
“Any nausea?”
“No.”
“We’ll keep our eye on you.”
She focused on him. “Who are you?”
“I’m sorry. I’m Rowan Hammond. What’s your name?”
“I’m Jenna McDonald.”
He smiled down at her. “I wish we had met under better circumstances, but I’m glad I was there to help.”
“Thank you. I have a feeling Payne would have liked to hurt me.”
“He’s evil. That’s for sure.” Hell, the man was worse than evil. He was a sadist with a black soul.
“Why are you in a towel?” Jenna asked.
“My clothes were dirty from the fight.”
“Did you get hurt?”
He smiled. “No, Sweetheart.”
He could tell the first moment she noticed she was naked and only a blanket covered her.
“Wait!” she exclaimed.
“Easy. You were filthy, and I had to check for injuries,” he told her.
He could tell she was starting to panic. He cupped her face. “Jenna, look at me.” He had to repeat himself a few moretimes before she heard. “I want you to really look at me and tell me what you feel.”
Jenna looked confused. “We just met … I don’t know you.”
“Look into my eyes, Sweetheart.”
They stared at each other. The longer she looked, the more relaxed she became. “You feel it,too?” he asked.
“I’m not sure what it is, but for some reason, I’m certain you won’t hurt me.”
He caressed her cheek with his thumb. “Never. There’s so much I want to say, but I can tell you’re in pain, so let’s get you some aspirin and into a shower.”
Rowan started to pull the blanket down, but she grabbed it and held it tightly against her chest.
He sighed. “Hold on.”
He walked into the bathroom and grabbed one of the robes. When he got back, he helped her sit up andput her arms in the robe. When it covered her, he pulled the blanket down.
“Let me help,” he said and lifted her off the bed to stand on her feet. “How do you feel? Any dizziness?”
