“She’s good for you.” I hear Bella whisper in my head. It has been a while since I’ve heard her, a part of me fearing she’d left.

“She isn’t you,” I say aloud as I step from the tub. Wrapping a towel around my waist as I stare at myself in the mirror.

“She isn’t supposed to be. What we had was special, but it was never meant to last.”

Leaning against the sink, I consider her words carefully. Bella made me a better person, made me want things I never dreamed of before I met her.

“I won’t ever forget you,” I swear, wiping the condensation from the mirror. “You will always be a part of me.”

“Oh, Dante. Of course you will, that’s how it’s supposed to be.”

I can hear the tinkling of her laugh, which in turn makes me smile.

“Kate deserves all of you, not just the tiny pieces you’re willing to share. You need to let me go, Dante, it’s time.”

My boots echooff the wooden floor as I walk into Angelo’s room. I stop short when I find Frankie sitting in Kate’s chair.

“Where is she?”

Frankie lowers one of Kate's books he’s reading before turning his attention toward me. “Taking a shower. She waited for you to finish.”

The farmhouse was at least a hundred years old, the plumbing original and one of the reasons I used to justify demolishing it.

Rounding the bed, I sit on the edge, “I think I know why Brady was fired from the police department.”

The records had been sealed, making it impossible for even Frankie to open them.

“Oh?”

“He’s an alcoholic.” Glancing over my shoulder to make sure Kate is still in the shower. “One who has hurt the wrong girl.”

I give Frankie the cliffsnotes of what Kate shared with me.

“What does your gut say, do you think she is skating the truth?”

Dropping my gaze to the floor, I picture the way she looked away from me as she told me about the night. “I think Kate tries hard to see the best in everyone.”

Frankie stands to his full height, “You got another call.”

A humorless laugh escapes my throat as I stand up with him. “As long as it isn’t from Boston, I don’t care.”

“You can’t hide from your past forever, Dante. One day it will come back to haunt you.”

Chapter

Twenty-Three

KATE

Elation fills my chest as I touch Angelo’s cool skin. “Your fever finally broke.” I whisper, not wanting to wake a sleeping Dante in the corner. He looks so innocent as he sleeps, not a care in the world as he walks in Dream Land.

“Now, it’s time for you to wake up.”

Checking him over, I can't contain my relief as I notice all positive signs he’s out of danger.

“Your family is waiting for you, so go ahead and push through the fog.”

Changing his IV bag, I grab my backpack and make my way to my place in the corner of the room. As I open my study guide, my gaze drifts to Dante who is still fast asleep. My lips still tingle from our kiss earlier in the day, even the heat of my shower couldn't wash the feeling away.
