Zane shifted to face me. “Besides the fact that you took his DNA without his consent? Probably because you meddled. Put yourself in his shoes. Kid spent his whole life thinking that his dad died before he was born, and now you drop the bomb on him that he’s alive.”
“And how is that any different than what I went through? Up until six months ago, I thought my dad was dead. Finding out he was alive was the greatest thing to ever happen to me—”
He cleared his throat with raised eyebrows. “The greatest thing?”
“Well, besides meeting you and finding out I was pregnant with baby Thor. I just…” I sighed. “I just really thought he would’ve been happier. Now, we may never speak again.”
“He’ll come around. I’m convinced it’s impossible to stay mad at you.”
“Really?” I said, a smile creeping onto my face.
“Really, Cap. Now, get comfortable and watch for anything suspicious.”
“Is this something you used to do a lot?”
He nodded. “Yeah, as long as you stay inconspicuous, it’s a good way to get information. I did surveillance on you.” The corner of his mouth lifted in a smirk. “I even peed in a bottle to avoid blowing my cover.”
It wasn’t a romantic thing to say, but I found myself turned on, regardless. “You watched me like this? Just hours and hours, doing nothing but watching me?”
“Yep. Camped out in the parking lot of the mall one night and waited for you to come out. Then I followed you back to your apartment—”
“Did you watch me get undressed?” I interrupted with a giggle.
His eyebrows pulled together as he frowned. “Uh, no. It was the night that Jackson Blake showed up at your door. I left when he did.”
I frowned. The big lug was ruining my fantasy by bringing up my ex-fiance. If we were going to pass the time, it was up to me to get him back on track. “What if he hadn’t been there?”
“What do you mean?” He lifted the binoculars and studied something near the door before lowering them again.
“I mean…” I ran a finger lightly down his arm. “What if it had just been me? Would you have stayed?”
“I don’t know,” he admitted. “It was pretty late. I guess I might’ve observed you for a little bit longer, just to see if there was anything I could’ve used on our case.”
I bit down on my lip, fighting a grin. “I remember there being this one area of the parking lot where you could clearly see into my apartment if the balcony blinds were open. What if you’d parked there?”
Zane rubbed at his beard, clearly thinking through the scenario like a cop would. “I guess it’s possible. If I had reason to believe that you were working with the Blake family and I didn’t know you’d be coming into the gym, it’s entirely possible that I might’ve camped out in the parking lot and watched you.”
Another fantasy entered my mind of me showering alone in the locker room while he watched from one of the nearby couches.
One fantasy at a time, Dakota.
My mouth went dry, and I swallowed before continuing. “So, you’re camped out in front of my apartment, and I come home from, say, comic book club. I look really hot, by the way. I go into my apartment and kick off my heels before stripping down. I don’t even look to see if the blinds are open before doing it. So, there I am in just my underwear, walking around my apartment without a care in the world.”
Zane’s face remained blank, but I watched as he shifted uncomfortably in his seat before reaching down to adjust himself through his jeans. “What’s the underwear look like, Cap?”
Welcome to the party, Detective Masterson.
“Oh, it’s that black lacy set you like so much. You know, the material is so sheer you can almost see my nipples if you look hard enough.”
His hand dropped back down to the crotch of his jeans.
“Maybe that’s what I’m wearing when you’re watching me. And then I remember that I’m thirsty and grab a bottled water from the fridge. I’m drinking it so fast that some spills from my mouth and down my chest. It’s so cold, and now my nipples are hard, just rubbing against the lace.”
Zane groaned softly and clenched his hand into a fist before asking, “Yeah? Then what?”
“Oh, I don’t want to wear a wet bra around the house, so I reach back and unclasp it, letting it fall to the floor. And, I look at the clock and realize it’s almost time for the news to come on, and I’m a single girl living in the big city all alone, I need to stay informed about current events.”
“The news?” He asked through his teeth, forcibly restraining himself.
