Matthew leaned into me. I swear I heard him purr, and he wasn’t even in his cat form. Could he really do that?

“All right,” Matthew said. “I forgive you. But concerning the next thing I show you, I demand you give me your full attention.”

“We promise,” River said.

“Good. Follow me, please. Next up is the primary bedroom. Think you can handle it?”

Ohh, our little omega house cat had more than just a sassy walk.

“My eyes are wide open.” I gave him a side hug.

We followed him down a short hall.

The room was small, but at least the bed was a king. That was the first thing I noticed. Everything else became a blur because when I saw that bed all I could think about was one thing.

Mate.

My beast gave our thoughts the word before I had the chance. It was a relief to feel him happy and relaxed inside me. I realized there were too many years when I didn’t feel him around too much and thought nothing of it, times when I should have paid attention. If I felt neglected by him, it only stood to reason he felt the same for me.

But regrets were for another day. This was a day of celebration. I had found my true family.

“How soft is that bed?” River asked.

“What?” Matthew gestured toward his sleeping arrangement. “This old thing?” He ran his hand over the comforter. Several fluffy pillows covered the headboard, along with a square pillow with the face of a cat printed on it.

I stepped forward and sat on the edge of the bed. My body bounced a little. “Feels great,” I announced.

River sat on the other side making, my body bounce again. “He’s right. It feels real good.”

“Glad to see you approve,” Matthew said. He sat down next to me, his thigh brushing mine.

I grabbed his hand and held it gently. “Thank you for inviting us here.”

“Why wouldn’t I?” A sweet smile spread across his face.

“We really should test this bed out,” River said from the other side.

“I agree.” I squeezed Matthew’s hand. “We need to give it a really good test.”

“Oh?” Matthew’s eyes sparkled. “What kind of test would that be?”

River stretched out until his head was near the pillows, then raised his hand toward us. “Get over here and we’ll figure it out.”

I leaned back, tugging Matthew with me until he was between River and me. Miraculously, we all sort of fit. No one was slipping off one side or the other. Yet.

“Wow,” River said. “We should take a moment to memorialize this occasion.”

“What occasion?” Matthew asked.

“Our first time being all together in one bed.”

“A moment of silence?” I asked.

“Yep. This is truly sacred,” River replied.

“Well,” Matthew began. “Can we make it a short moment? Because I’ve been waiting so long for the two of you to be with me like this and I so badly want you to touch me. Like right now.”

“Okay, you two.” River took charge. “Close your eyes. One. Two. Three. There. Moment done.”
