Page 79 of How to Win the Girl

What kind of guy fakes being his own sibling on a date? I’ve never heard of such a thing!

The balls on this guy.

Seriously.

Drew

Yes,I’ve seen this girl before.

Of course I have; she’s in my Mass Comm class. She’s pretty. Sits always at the right side of the auditorium, usually dressed in a sweatshirt. Of course I’ve noticed— I have a functioning set of eyes, don’t I?

But just because I’ve noticed her doesn’t mean I don’t notice most people. Unlike my brother, I spend a lot of my time making observations so my first impressions aren’t based on assumptions. I assess. I analyze. I weigh options.

Yeah.

She’s attractive.

But so are a lot of people.

“What’s your name, by the way?” I sidle up to her once class is over, walking side by side to the exit of the building.

“Daisy.”

“And you said you’ve been talking to my brother?”

She stops.

Turns.

Sighs louder than any sigh I’ve ever heard.

“Not just talking to him. We went on a date last night, and he kissed me.”

I swallow. “A date?”

This is news to me.

Daisy nods. “Like a date. Not to study.”

I’m tall, so it’s easy for me to keep up with her determined strides. “While he was pretending to be me?”

Daisy nods again. “Yup.”

I let out a low whistle. “Why would he do that?”

It literally makes no sense. He can’t carethatmuch about what I’m doing or that much about my love life enough to hijack it.

“How should I know what goes on in a guy’s head?” She stops in the middle of the sidewalk. “You know him better than anyone—you tell me.”

It could be a million things, but I’ll go with, “Guess he thought he was doing me a favor.”

“Doing you a favor?” It seems to make no sense to her.

“I’ve been on a kick lately, and I’m…” This is going to sound horrible. “Sick of being single.”

I sound like a whiney little bitch, even to my own ears, but the information doesn’t seem to faze her.
