“Relax, sugar. Do we need to do a breathing exercise?”

“Stop playing, Maze. I have the right to be nervous about you calling me at almost five in the morning.”

“I only called because I knew you were awake, Wesley.”

“How could you have possibly known that I was awake?” I scoffed.

“My chest feels really tight. Not like I’m having a heart attack. It’s more like anxiety. I know you’re up worrying and overthinking everything that’s ever happened to you.”

“What does your chest feeling tight have to do with anything?”

“For years, any time I had a dream or a nightmare about you, I woke up with my chest feeling tight. I figured it was just my broken heart malfunctioning or some shit. Now I know it’s you. When you were at my place, I woke up at a certain time every night, and you were awake too.”

“Really, Maze? You expect me to believe that?”

“What time did you wake up?”

“About ten minutes ago.”

“I figured. It took me a few minutes to debate if I was going to call you or not. You don’t have to believe it. Just know that we’re still connected.”

“It’s possible. Why does it sound like you’re on your bike, Amaze?”

“Because I’m on the way to you. I want to hold my wife and help her get back to sleep,” he professed, catching me off guard.

“W-what?”

“I am on the way to see my wife,” he repeated, making sure to enunciate every syllable.

“I heard you, Maze. What do you mean you’re on your way?”

“I’m on my bike right now and heading your way. See you in a few, love.”

“You shouldn’t have come out at this time of night to come here.”

“First, it’s morning. Second, we already established that you were wide awake. I can feel it when you’re restless or sad. It puts me into repair mode. I want to help you to heal from this. We need to do it together.

My phone beeped, making me aware that he had ended the call. Suddenly, I was nervous as hell. I sprang to my feet, then sat back down on the bed. What did he mean he was on the way? I missed the hell out of Amaze, but now that he was on the way to see me, my nerves were shot.

I considered showering since I had been sweating like a pig while I slept. Instead of jumping in the shower, I headed straight for the kitchen. That scotch from earlier called my name loud and clear. I picked up the shot glass that I had used earlier and tossed one back. I closed my eyes as it burned my chest on the way down.

I considered drinking another but reconsidered. I didn’t want Amaze to smell the alcohol on my breath and start asking questions. I didn’t need to create unnecessary worry. We had enough problems.

A knock on the door startled me. Not once did I consider that it wasn’t Maze. He had a thing about surprises. I shook my head as I made my way to the door. I looked out of the peephole just to make sure it was him.

He was super sexy in a black leather jacket with his hair down. It had grown so much over the years. I blew into my hand to check my breath before I stepped back and opened the door.

“Hey, baby,” he said, taking a step to invade my space.

“Hey,” I whispered just as he pressed his full lips to mine. My pussy warmed as his familiar aroma filled my nostrils.

Maze put a little distance between us as he set his helmet on the coffee table, removed his coat, and tossed it on the couch. Once he was situated, he turned his attention back to me. Two long strides placed him in front of me again. He smelled so good that I took a deep breath. He stared me down like prey, and I said a silent prayer that he would take me out of my misery and fuck me right then and there. It had been far too long.

“Let’s go to bed.” With that said, he swept me up into his arms. I wrapped my legs around his waist and my arms around his neck to brace myself. He moved down the hall, finding my bedroom without instruction.

We didn’t speak another word as he eased into bed with me in tow. Once we were comfortable, he kissed my nose.

“Good night, gorgeous,” he mumbled.
