Page 110 of Our Deceptive Heat

Mako doesn’t smile anymore. I don’t make jokes. Envy doesn’t touch his instruments, his only focus is on finding her.

The music inside us died when she walked out of our lives.

We fucked up. We made the wrong choice for the right reasons, and I think if we don’t find her, we might very well waste away.

I didn’t know heartbreak could really kill you. I thought that was all in songs or romance novels.

My heart is broken, and my pack is dying. I wonder if that can be our next big hit.

The man by the jeep looks up when we get close. He’s got light brown skin, black hair that is glossy and dark, and unusual amber eyes.

He holds out a hand. “Hi, I’m Gael. I’m going to be the person who drives you here, there, and everywhere.”

He seems friendly enough, Envy shakes hands with him, and we all pile into the jeep.

I barely notice the drive, but then we’re at a hotel that is one of the nicest I’ve ever seen. It obviously cost a fortune.

Gael takes the others up to the room while I turn back to the beach. I walk down onto the sand and stare out at the endless horizon.

Where is she?

This island? Another?

“Digs?”

I jerk my head and find Envy standing beside me.

“Yeah?”

“You’ve been out here for an hour. Do you want to come in and eat?”

I should. I know I should, but the idea of eating makes me feel sick. All I want to do is start searching.

“No, let’s go into the hotel or town or whatever this island has and start looking.”

“Okay, let’s do that.”

He takes my hand and leads me back to the reception of the hotel. I wait until the others come out, staring numbly at the walls.

The drive in is tense. There are people everywhere, laughing, loving, having fun. Couples, families. I hate them all.

Every person who isn’t her is a knife in my chest. I feel like I can’t breathe. It goes on and on, minute by painful minute.

Until around midnight when the people have all but gone, and it’s just us wandering in this paradise.

This paradise that feels like hell.

Chapter thirty-four

Tyr

A million islands couldn’thide you from me- Tyr Fate

We split up, and I head down to walk the beaches, searching through the massive throngs of people. With my big sunglasses on and dressed casually, no one seems to recognise me, and after a while, I start to relax.

The white sand is hot, and I take off my shoes so I can walk in the water. The water is almost blinding, glittering with the sun’s light, but when I look down, it’s so clear.

What is this world?
