I might have millions in the bank and invested in stocks and shares, but what I’m beginning to realize is that I might want to make an investment into something that will occupy me on a daily basis.
And that’s exactly what I’m pondering this morning at the breakfast table over at Xander’s cottage…
‘So you’ve never found it an issue being a co-owner?’ I say, sipping on my hot black coffee. ‘I mean, I know you guys are all so close. But there’s never been any competition for being theactualboss?’
‘No, not really,’ Xander smiles, crunching on his morning Rainbow Crunch. ‘We don’t always agree, but there’s always been a great understanding that we do what’s best for the crew as a whole. It works pretty well for us.’
‘Yeah, I can see,’ I reply. ‘So how would you feel about a new Daddy-led construction crew popping up in town?’
‘Whaaaa?’ Xander replies, a look of shock on his face. ‘Are you kidding me?’
‘Yes, I am!’ I laugh, the look of horror on Xander’s face telling me I need to stop the joke before I have one riled up boy spitting out his breakfast cereal. ‘But I do think that I want to maybe go into business with some other Daddies. I’ve got a few friends who are in a similar position to me. It won’t be construction, don’t worry, but I think it might be good for me to find a business to put me energy into.’
‘But what about your CrossFit plans?’ Xander says. ‘And by the way, I booked us in for a training session later.’
‘CrossFit will be a nice challenge,’ I say. ‘But I think I’ve had my time in professional sport. Who knows how far CrossFit will go, but what I want to make sure of is that I’ve got something in my day to day life. It hurt me when I lost my final soccer match, but if I’d had a business to fall back on, I don’t think the pain would have lasted so long. Sport is great, but I want to live a fuller life from now on.’
I can see Xander taking my words on board.
He might be a baby boy, but Xander has got a deep compassion for other people and he always seems to know what’s going on in my head – even when I’m grumpy over something totally unrelated to him!
‘I get it,’ Xander says, smiling. ‘By the way, I’ll be at the site alone for a couple of hours today. The guys are all needed over at De Valla Builder’s Yard to pick up those steel joists. You can stop by and say hi if you want. That’s if your not too busy planning your new business?’
The boy flashes me his beautiful smile and I nod.
Xander’s one in a million – and once I’m done with my morning chores, I will certainly be popping over to the site to see what he’s up too.
I just hope he’s working hard when I arrive – just because he’s my baby boy, it doesn’t mean I’ll tolerate any slacking…
The drive over to the construction site was pretty much like any other drive, except for one thing. The whole way, I wasn’t able to stop thinking about how I was going to potentially go into business with some of my Daddy friends.
Specifically, I was thinking of hitting up Trent and Clay with an idea that might just prove to be highly profitable but a whole heap of fun too.
But as I’m pulling into the parking spot out at the front of the site, my mind is suddenly diverted from any thoughts of my possible new business venture.
‘What… the… hell?’ I say, looking on in disbelief at what appears to be Xander lying shirtless on the floor and sunbathing. ‘Are you kidding me, boy?’
Without further ado, I shut off the truck’s engine and make my way as quickly as I can toward Xander.
I don’t want to alert Xander to my approach, so I fall back on my old soccer training and run as fleet footed as I can, managing to dodge my way around any hard or crunchy surfaces that might alert the boy.
I make it all the way up to him and he still hasn’t opened his eyes.
For a brief moment, I take in the sight before me.
Wearing only a pair of cut-off denim shorts, Xander’s big, muscular body looks pretty damn incredible. Xander alwayshas a good tan on account of working outdoors, but it’s looking especially good right now.
However, tan or no tan, the boy is in trouble with his Daddy.
‘Wake up!’ I bark. ‘Wake up and stand up!’
‘Whuuuu?’ Xander says, startled and immediately realizing that he’s been caught – and discipline is inevitably about to follow.
‘So this is where my money is going?’ I growl, the look in my eyes telling Xander that this isn’t a joke. ‘You may be my boy, but that shouldn’t mean you take liberties with this project.’
‘But… I was just…’
‘Topping up your tan?’ I say, fixing a hard glare on Xander. ‘Catching up on some sleep?’
