I raced for the bathroom and vomited into the toilet. The blood coated the bowl as I retched in misery.
“Your mother is alright,” I heard Ace tell Brendon. “But there are few who survived. I was able to get them to safety. But there were dozens of hunters, skilled ones, that knew how to kill a vampire. This wasn’t just an attack, it was a massacre.”
I moved to the sink after flushing the toilet and brushed my teeth.
“Are they organized, the hunters?” I asked.
Brendon nodded, “Yes, at least they seem to be. But I have never seen more than five or six work together. Dozens, well, I can’t even imagine how they managed to come up with that many trained hunters.”
“Unless someone tipped them off,” Ace said giving Brendon a side-eyed glance.
“Are you saying that this could have been caused by a vampire?” I asked incredulously.
Ace shrugged, “Cian’s can’t get to you through us. But he can get to you through your parents. What better way to throw you off guard than to create drama with our hive and upset you?”
“He would kill his own subjects?” I said in disgust.
Brendon’s lips pursed together, “I wouldn’t put it past him.”
“Wow, I really need to kill that son of a bitch, don’t I?”
The guys looked at me in surprise.
“What?” I said, throwing my hands up. “He’s horrible! He compels people to do things against their will. He kills his own subjects. Was he working with the Vampire Hunters? There is no way I am going to allow that prick to hurt anyone else. There is no way I am going to sit back while he makes puppets out of all of us. As for my so-called parents, we can deal with that fucked up shit later. One problem at a time.”
Brendon took my hand, “We will support you, let’s get back to the gym.”
Ace groaned but got to his feet and made his way over to me. He tucked me close and kissed my forehead.
This was my family now, Susan and Bill had made their choice, and so had I.
