CHAPTER 4 – Chloe
I felt a large roughpalm grasp my own, and then a jolt of electricity raced through me. My eyes snapped open and I sat straight up. My hand was still locked with someone else, but I hadn’t the wherewithal to even worry about it.
Before my eyes, I could see a violent windstorm. It was in a barren place unlike any other that I had ever seen been. The image flashed, and I saw a girl with pale blonde hair floating in the air. Her hands were glowing and seemed to be holding a red flame or fireball.
Again, the image flashed; this time I could see my body naked and sprawled out in a room that I wasn’t familiar with. A blonde man whose face I couldn’t see was pumping his hips furiously as he fucked me into oblivion.
My body shuddered as if this were happening right now. I was on the cusp of release and then the image faded, and I was back in the med unit breathing heavily and trying to figure out what happened.
“Your head, Zack,” I heard Betty call out and turned toward the man she was speaking too.
He looked remarkably like his father, only his body was more defined, and he was younger. The boy hadn’t seen an ugly day in his life. My eyes raked over his surprised expression; whatever he had been expecting, it wasn’t me—that was obvious.
I tried to yank my hand out of his grasp, but he held it tighter.
“Chloe,” he said my name as if trying it out on his tongue.
Suddenly I remembered that this dickhead had left me in that black hold with Queen Collects-a-lot. Not only that, but I nearly died because he went off fighting some war instead of staying and imprinting with me.
This time when I yanked my hand away I succeeded. I tried to ignore the way my nipples were pressed against the thin cotton of the sleeping gown that I was wearing. I also ignored the wet heat between my thighs. There was no point lusting over the man. He left me, and there were few things that would make me angrier.
“Your head, Zack, it’s completely healed.”
Betty stepped forward and shoved a mirror in the man’s hand. He looked in it and blinked in surprise.
“I have seen Sarah heal Axel, but it only happened after they had become Mated Pairs.”
There was no way in hell I would be a Mated Pair with this man. He had already proven to be unstable. Granted I needed him to live, so I wouldn’t kill him. But I would be damned if I married the idiot. And Betty had already told me that finding and claiming your Mated Pair was for life.
“A fluke, probably.” I pushed the covers off my legs and swung them over the side of the bed. “Thanks for coming out. You probably need to get back to your war.”
I moved to stand.
“Chloe, you need to stay in bed.” Betty rushed forward, taking my arm.
“I am tired of being in bed. And I feel good, really good actually. Now that your son has decided to allow me to live I feel amazing.”
Zack frowned, “Allow you to live? What are you talking about?”
Betty’s lips drew into a tight line. I knew that she would be giving him a piece of her mind. I wasn’t mad at him, hell, I didn’t know the man, but I would never trust him. I had learned that you can’t rely on anyone, and my first few months in space, while I was recovering from cancer, only confirmed that.
“Go back to where you need to be,” I said with what I hoped was a smile, “And thank you for coming back. I had given up hope.”
I moved around the man and started toward the door.
I could only imagine the conversation that Betty was having with her son via dramatic eye rolls and hand gestures. A small smile crossed my face, this one more natural.
“What’s going on?” Rylee met me in the hallway.
“Going to my sleeping pod; can you remind me where it is?”
Rylee nodded and began to take the pathway to the left. In no time we were in familiar space and I thankfully went inside. But there I stopped. On the floor was some luggage that certainly didn’t belong to me.
“Whose things are in here and how do I get them removed?”
“Listen, Princess,” A deep voice rang out from the doorway. “This is my room and I am not going anywhere.”
I looked up to see the Prodigal Son glaring at Rylee and me.
