Kat waived her hand, “Oh, it’s easy, all you have to do it look at the eyes, children’s eyes are fun and playful, and the adults here have sad, old eyes. But it wouldn’t matter anyway because if someone is in a shift their iris is green.”

Sarah’s brows knit together, “Every time? There are no exclusions?”

Kat shook her head, “Nope.” And then she looked pensive, “That is a Seronian secret; you won’t tell anyone, will you?”

Sarah shook her head, “Of course I would never betray your trust. Now, as for Axel...”

She trailed off playfully and I pretended to be the wounded party.

“I cannot believe my life mate would sell me out like that!”

Kat giggled. “I knew you were life mates, you are too perfect together.”

I could tell Sarah was thinking about the massive brand I had put on her body by the way her cheeks were flushing. In our uniforms, it wasn’t visible to others.

Sarah cleared her throat. “Like I said before, you are wicked smart. Have you seen your mother today? How is she feeling?”

Kat’s face slid into a frown, “She doesn’t feel well again. I am very worried about her. Did you find anything out about the water supply?”

Sarah looked at me before answering. “We are to go there this afternoon. Would you like to come? Perhaps we can make a game out of seeing who can reveal the most shifted Seron.”

Kat bounced up. “I would love to! Let me ask my mother if it is alright!”

Sarah smiled, “Go ahead, we will wait here for you.”

The moment she walked out of the room I pulled out the device to seal the area, so we could speak freely.

“How many of them had green eyes?” I grumbled.

“How in the fuck should I know?” she answered happily. “But it doesn’t matter, we know that younger children are not prevalent on the planet and that is mostly what we saw. Now that we know what to look for we can gauge better how many people are in on this deception. Also, when we test the water we need to make sure and use systems that were not made on Seron. I don’t know if Sabine can be trusted or not.”

There was a knock on the door and I lifted the silencer just as Zack entered.

“You invited a kid along?” he ranted at Sarah.

Don’t get me wrong, Zack and I have been friends for as long as I can remember but it seems like ever since his imprinted pair showed up and didn’t awaken, he’s been a dick. And the person who tends to get the most crap from him is Sarah.

That had to stop.

In a whirl of motion, I had him pinned against the wall by the scruff of his neck.

“What the fuck, man?”

“You will not disrespect my life mate ever again. Don’t question her, don’t talk down to her, or I will fucking rip your lungs out.”

I let his toes touch the floor before growling at him and then backing away.

He gasped for air, “I’m sorry, man. I didn’t mean...” he trailed off. “You are right, Axel.”

Zack turned to Sarah. “I apologize for my behavior.”

Sarah’s eyes were wide, and I prayed that for once in this beautiful girl’s life she could just take an apology and let things go.

Sarah smirked. “Well, you should be. But that is okay, I forgive you.”

“Why?” Zack asked.

“You are under a lot of stress and I feel bad about what happened with your imprinted pair. I am sorry she had to be left behind.”
