CHAPTER 14 – Axel

You don’t become oneof the best space warriors in the galaxy without fighting a battle or two. But fighting a battle on your own and fighting a battle with Sarah are two very different things. The woman is a force of nature. I am constantly in awe and utter disbelief at what she chooses to say and do next. Most people storming into their first space battle would perhaps approach the matter with some trepidation.

The bat out of hell, warrior princess thing she had going for her, was fucking sexy. I wish I could say that I was confident in her abilities. While she had come a long way, I still wasn’t sure if Sarah would be able to harness the power inside of her. She had 50/50 chance of saving the galaxy and destroying us all, and this was when the girl was sleeping.

As the blasts continued to shake the spaceship I grabbed Sarah and lifted her so that we were face to face.

“No hero antics are we clear?”

She smirked at me, “I wouldn’t dream of it.”

“You would,” I replied, “But you aren’t going to do anything stupid that might get yourself killed.”

Her face softened infinitesimally, “Aw, Axel, you complete me too. Now, enough of this emotional bull-shit, we have some alien asses to kick.”

And they say that romance is dead.

I kissed her hard and then held on for dear life as a particularly loud blast caused me to almost lose my footing. As soon as the lights flickered back on I set Sarah down and we took off at a run.

“This would look so much cooler if we had theme music,” Sarah panted as we rounded the last corner.

“If we survive we can talk about it,” I grumbled and then shoved her down when I saw that the ship was being invaded. “Stay here and don’t get up!”

I ran toward the bridge with my firearm in one hand and my armor phasing over my body. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Sarah flash past me with her hands raised and red glowing fire shit coming out of them. I had to admit that she looked sexy as hell. I also should admit that I almost shit myself when I saw one of the Quokiots take aim at her head. The Quoki come from the realm past the Galactic Quadrant and they were usually non-threatening creatures.

Nearly eight feet tall and willowy thin, the Quoki lived in peace. This didn’t make any sense! They were vegetarians for fuck’s sake.

I aimed my firearm at the Quokiot that was threatening Sarah, but she was faster and lasered the solider straight in half. Before moving to the next one that had Heath by the head and was bashing it into the monitor on the control panel.

“Where is the breach?” I called out to Zack who I could see was wrapped up, literally, by a Quokiot of his own.

He motioned with his head toward the sky deck and I raced over to see three more attempting entry into our ship. They had somehow sealed their ship with ours; that loud crash must have been when they landed on top of us. We needed to seal the gap and break away. Aiming toward the intruders I fired twice, bringing two down of them down, but the third escaped the blasts.

With a horrible shriek, it flew toward me at a speed that I had no idea the Quoki were capable of. Turning I tucked and rolled out of the way. When I stood, I was facing back into the bridge and saw that Sarah had managed to free Zack. They both took on the one that had just attacked me.

Zack firing his blaster just as Sarah stopped him from advancing.

“We need to seal the gap,” I yelled to Sarah.

She nodded and ran toward me. I cupped my hands together and as she jumped, helped to boost her into the air. Sarah flew up toward the breech and grabbed a low hanging piece of metal. Her eyes began to glow, and her hair started whipping around her head.

Another Quoki appeared at the gap and I immediately shot him. He fell through the passageway, nearly knocking Sarah from where she was hanging.

“Hurry,” I called out impatiently.

I had the strongest impression, that had she been able to flip me off, she would have.

Again, her eyes lit, the power within her radiating out of every pore. The metal began to glow orange and red as it melted, sealing the hole the Quoki had used.

“How do we dislodge their vessel?” Heath called out, as both he and Zack appeared on either side of me.

“How far are we from landing in Omega?” I asked.

Zack frowned, “We are circling now. I can’t believe that they attacked so close to an intergalactic space station.”

“Can we reach anyone with firepower in the space station?” I opened my arms. “Sarah, jump.”

She immediately let go and fell into my arms. I could feel her exhaustion and my heart rate spiked in my chest. Had she given too much of herself?
