“The picnic basket,” I managed, making him edge back to stare at me inexplicably until he finally moved toward the basket and opened it to find a scroll of paper he picked up and stared at blindly.
Until I explained, “It’s a graphical reading of the baby’s heartbeat. We can hear it at the next appointment, but they wouldn’t let me record it due to some stupid regulations…”
He studied it from every angle until he finally buried his face in the paper and the ink was running when I finally gently tugged it back.
“Oh, no, oh, fuck, I ruined the most important thing ever. We can get more?”
“I made a copy of this one. Don’t worry, it’s fine. I planned ahead.”
“Oh, thank God, you’re so smart. Brilliant. Perfect. Are you hungry? Do you need to lay down? Whatever you need, you can have. Oh, I love you, I could not love you more, Grace Carson.”
As he swept me into a huge yet careful hug, I smiled over his shoulder. Guess all my worries had been unfounded.
