Standing up, I stretch. And that’s when I see Sarah in the doorway, watching me with a hooded gaze.
I look back at her for a second, hesitating. Then I exhale a long breath.
“Come in here,” I say, beckoning her.
She bites her lip, coming partway in the door. “Hi.”
I set my guitar aside and keep stretching. She’s been on my mind for days, but she doesn’t need to know that. “What’s up?”
She shrugs a shoulder. “Not much. How’s your songwriting going?”
I sigh and roll my eyes. “Not great, to be honest.”
She takes a step toward me, then stops. “I think I heard a little of your song earlier. Do you mind playing it for me again?”
Taking a deep breath, I shrug. “Okay. Sure.”
I sit down and put my fingers on the strings, then pause.
“What?” she says, sitting on the arm of the couch.
I look at her for several seconds. Her eyes look a little tired. Her hair is a bit of a mess.
I smile. She wears being a little messy well.
“I feel like we should talk about what happened last week,” I say with a shrug. “You’re basically the only person I know in the house and the fact that we’ve been avoiding each other for days has been painfully obvious.”
She glances away. “Yeah. It has been really awkward the past few days…”
“To put it mildly,” I add. “So… what?”
She pulls a face. “I have to figure out what that means?”
Repressing a sigh, I shake my head. “No. But surely there is a way that we can still get along.”
She crosses her arms. “No one said we weren’t getting along.”
“Okay, but… I need someone in this house to talk to. And you need…” Trailing off, I realize I don’t know what I bring to the table.
She rolls her eyes. “Okay, okay. Let’s back up. If the… umm…”
She searches for the words. I am more than happy to jump in.
“The kiss?” I supply.
She shoots me a look. “Fine. The kiss. If that is the problem, why don’t we just… I don’t know. Forget about it, I guess?”
I raise my eyebrows. “Just like that? You can do that?”
“Are you saying that you can’t?” she asks.
“No.” I shake my head. “If that’s what you need to do to be able to move on, then that works for me.”
Sarah pinches her lips closed and meets my eyes for several seconds. Finally she just nods. “All right. We just forget that it ever happened.”
Wiggling my eyebrows, I pose a question. “What ever happened? I don’t remember anything about anything.”
She flashes me a tiny smile. “Okay.”
