“That’s…good?” I question because Caine is extremely happy about this, which is unusual for him and I’m still trying to catch up.
“That’s very good, killer, he’s a piece of shit and is getting caught for it.”
“Is that because of Danner?” I wonder.
Adam shakes his head. “Doesn’t seem like it, but I wouldn’t put it past her.”
“Who the fuckis she?”I can’t help but ask. They both shake their heads.
“Someone who we’re lucky to have around,” Adam says.
“That’s true. So what does this mean for my parent’s trial?”
“They’re getting another attorney, but luckily my dad’s whole firm is being investigated so it won’t be someone there. Including my asshole brother.”
“That’s good, but does that mean they may have a higher chance of getting off?” I flinch at the thought.
“I don’t think so. They have a lot of evidence thanks to your friend; I wouldn’t worry too much about it, baby girl.”
I drop down on the couch, next to Adam, and he pulls me into his side, which is always so calming when he does. I know we both have our trauma and his struggle with physical touch makes it more special when he initiates it in a not sexual scenario.
“Okay, Daddy.” I smile up at him. He groans, squeezing my shoulder.
“Don’t start something you don’t want to finish,” he threatens.
“Oh, I’ll finish it.” I smile.
“Damn fucking right you will, killer, let’s go to bed.”
I look at Adam, hoping he’ll join. And I manage to drag them both to bed. Hoping they’re right and that we don’t have anything to worry about. I can’t take anymore setbacks in life. I need everything to work out from now on.
I feel like I’ve earned a bit of peace in my life and I would like that to be with my three men and myself. No risk of prison, no risk of crazy family kidnappings. The only crazy can be between the four of us. And that’s the type of crazy I prefer.
“You really didn’t haveanything to do with Caine’s dad being investigated?” I ask Danner as we sit on the beach, which has become one of my favorite routines. We walk some, watch theocean some. We talk, but sometimes we’re silent. Danner knows what I need just like my guys do.
Of course in different ways.
“No, I really didn’t,” she insists.
“You sure you didn’t use some of your little vigilante powers to get him caught?”
She chuckles. “I’m not a vigilante.”
“Undercover cop?”
“Absolutely not.”
“Connected to the mob?”
She shakes her head. “Will you just drop it and accept me for who I am without needing to have all the answers?”
I huff out a breath. “That wasn’t a no about the mob.”
“Max,” she practically scolds and I roll my eyes.
“I’ll figure it out one of these days,” I insist.
“Yeah, okay. Anyway, no I didn’t have anything to do with that, but I may have had something to do with another thing.”
