Chapter 38
Del
“To Cabo, boys!” Theo raises his shot glass of tequila. “Cheers to a kick-ass trip. And cheers to the start of a kick-ass playoff season when we get back!”
We cheer and tap our glasses together before downing our shots. I grab a napkin from our table at the steakhouse where we’re having dinner tonight and wipe my mouth. Our server drops off roasted brussel sprouts, warm bread, and shrimp cocktail. While waiting for the ladies to join us, we ordered appetizers and drinks.
I check my phone to make sure I haven’t missed a call or text from my mom. I almost didn’t come on this trip, I was so worried about leaving her. But she wouldn’t hear of Dakota or me missing our vacation to fuss over her. She promised me she’d stay at my place while we’re in Mexico. And she promised to call or text me if anything happened.
I exhale and silently tell myself not to stress out. She’s okay. She’s safe. We filed the restraining order the morning after the attempted break-in. And my dad hasn’t come by the house or called mom since then.
I hope with everything in me that he goes away for good this time, but doubt digs at me, like a side stitch. I have a feeling it won’t be that easy.
I ignore the thought, determined not to let my dad ruin this night or this trip.
Theo hands me another shot of tequila, and I down it. I’m in the middle of swallowing when I see the ladies walking into the restaurant. When I catch sight of Ingrid, I choke. My eyes bulge out of my head.
Good fucking god, she looks incredible.
She’s wearing the skimpiest dress I’ve ever seen. Her legs look a mile long and her boobs look like they’re about to pop out of that tiny strapless gold dress she’s wearing.
I thump my chest and cough. Around me, the guys chuckle. Theo rolls his eyes.
Ingrid walks over to me and sits in the chair next to me. The corner of her mouth twitches. She’s clearly amused at the reaction she got out of me.
“Hey,” she says in a playful tone.
My gaze goes straight to her boobs. They’re covered in tiny bits of glitter.
“You look…holy shit. I can’t even think of a good enough word to describe how hot you look,” I whisper.
She giggles. “You think so?”
“Uh, yeah.”
She bites her bottom lip. “I borrowed Sophie’s dress. It’s a little short on me.”
I grip the back of her chair and lean my face closer to her. “It’s a perfect fit, if you ask me.”
Her smile turns smug and giddy and it’s cute as hell.
The ladies order a couple bottles of champagne. While sipping on our drinks and sharing appetizers, we chat about our fishing excursion.
“So who got seasick?” Ingrid asks.
Theo and Blomdahl point at each other.
Maya smiles and rolls her eyes at her husband. “You should have listened to me,” she says.
He slides his arm around her waist and pulls her close. He drops a kiss on her lips. “You were right. I’m an idiot.”
She laughs and runs a hand through his blond hair. “You’re also ridiculously handsome, and that’s why I put up with you.”
Theo pumps a fist in the air. We all laugh. Everyone takes a minute to look over the menu.
Ingrid turns to me. “What are you hungry for?”
I hold her gaze for a second before I glance down at her lap. Her lips part and she gasps softly. Her pupils dilate the slightest bit.
