“I might have a solution.” Dash went to his bike, retrieved three boxes from the compartment behind the seat, and handed them to his enforcer and road captain.

They moved to the center of the road, twenty feet behind the truck and bikes, sprinkling nails from the boxes, metal tinkling and bouncing on the pavement.

My War god rumbled like distant thunder, and I sucked down a lungful of smoke.

“Fucking genius.” I stuffed the cigarette between my lips, went over to Dash, and showed him my appreciation with a thump on his back.

Dash smiled but didn’t let the compliment go to his head. “Can we push the truck harder and outrun the cops?”

No chance of that when the undercover fuckers drove speedy BMWs.

Ryda, his road captain, pressed his lips tight together. “On these roads, it could damage the suspension if we go faster.”

“How much faster can we safely push it?”

“Ten miles an hour at best.” That was a man who knew his shit. Dash chose well.

The new president rounded up his men with a whistle and a forefinger in the air. “Let’s get back on the road!”

His men were at their positions within seconds.

Pleased with how my new man handled the unexpected situation, I smiled, taking in the last of my cigarette before disposing of it on the side of the road, lighting up more grass. A little show for the drones and cops as they passed. Explanation as to how it was set on fire in the first place. With my powers, I slashed grass along a strip twenty feet long, blowing it into a wide pile at the center of the road, setting it alight.

Alaric’s body twisted back into his hawk, and he burst into flight.

“I want an update on the nails,” I told him, throwing my leg over the bike. “Two tugs if it takes out one car, three for both.”

Alaric gave me a shriek in reply.

“Take out that fucking drone too.” I kicked the stand of my bike up, ready to leave, get some distance between the cops and us.

Another shriek and Alaric flew off.

I stuffed my helmet back on and brought my bike back onto the road.

Ryda took off, leading the trail of bikes and truck.

We got another ten miles down the road when Alaric tugged twice. Fucking fantastic. One car taken down. Now we had to take care of the next.

A further five miles along, Alaric kept pinging me, warning me of danger.

I checked my rearview and caught a dark vehicle half a mile back. We couldn’t outrun that. Couldn’t escape the drone.

Body tensed and ready for battle, I let the drums commence, calling my army to war. Throwing up my arm, I sent the signal to Arden beside me, tearing around the truck to alert Beau and Dash ahead of us.

I checked over my shoulder and caught lights flashing. Fuck.Game on, motherfuckers. The cop car tore along the strip of country road, hailing us to pull over. A check in my mirror caught the BMW badge.

The truck slowed, letting me know Dash made the decision to fight this up close and personal. Fire pumped in my veins, ready to tear throats out and let my Jackal dine on pig flesh.

The black BMW overtook Ryda and me, forcing the truck and front riders to pull up on the roadside. We cut our engines, threw off our helmets, and joined Dash by his bike.

Two plain-clothes cops got out of the car. Jeans, button shirts, clean shaven, neat hair. Straightlaced. I had to hold myself back from turning them to fucking ash.

“There a problem, officer?” Dash played dumb like he played cool.

“What’s your business?” the cop asked, gesturing at the truck. “What delivery requires escorting by bikers.”

Dash shrugged casually. “Not sure what you’re implying, officer. We’re just out on a Wednesday ride.”
