I scooted closer and pulled my feet under me. “I started flirting with Henry, Seth, and Woodrow in front of Mills to piss him off, to piss all three of them off. It didn’t always feel like acting, though, and then last night, at the bar, they called my bluff. Next thing I know, I’m screaming the house down and Seth’s calling me a good girl.”

She screamed and slapped my arm. “Oh, my god! Yes! Yes!”

One of her other men, Dean, came sprinting into the living room. “What is it? What’s wrong? What—”

“Nellie banged the Sheriff hotties!”

I slapped her arm back, lightly, and groaned. “Vera!”

“Don’t call them hotties. What’s wrong with you? They’re not hot. We’re hot.Yourmen are hot, woman.” Dean bent over and rested his hands on his knees. “You scared the shit out of me. No screaming until there’s not a baby growing inside you! And maybe not even then.”

I rolled my lips between my teeth to stop a laugh.

“And you.” He turned on me. “You’re laughing but just wait until your brothers find out. Are you serious about Henry, Seth, and Woodrow? Are they taking care of you? Do you need me totalk to them? Are they good with Waylan? If things are weird, you come here. We have space for you and we love Way.”

I gaped at him with my mouth wide open. Then, with burning cheeks, I turned to Vera. “What. The. Hell. Is. Happening?”

She snorted. “You’ve triggered Dean’s overprotective gene.”

“Me? What the hell did I do?” I frowned. “I was just sitting here, minding my own business.”

“You weren’t minding your own business when you banged the Sheriffs.” Vera shifted in her seat and groaned. “Help me up, Dean. I have to pee.”

“Leave her there, Dean. She deserves to piss herself.”

He grinned then. “I like you.”

I shot a look at Vera. “Your men like me.”

She squeezed my hand. “Of course, they do. You’re amazing. Such a good girl.”

I gasped and Dean snorted. “Vera!”

CHAPTER 26

Nellie

There was a full house at Ms. Vivian’s when Waylan and I arrived home that evening. Three motorcycles and Ms. Vivian’s little blue station wagon were parked in front of the house, along with a bright pink convertible. I parked next to Woodrow’s bike and looked over at Waylan. She held her new BB gun in one hand and about a million bb’s in her other hand. Reed was a dead man.

“Who’s that?” She nodded toward the porch and I looked up to see Stephanie standing next to Henry with her hand on his arm.

“Bitch.” I muttered it under my breath, but of course, Waylan heard.

“Mom!” She let out a wild laugh. “I’m going to tell Henry what you said!”

I gasped. “No, you’re not! I didn’t mean to say that, Way. It was an accident!”

She pushed open her door and dove out of Beatrix before I could catch her. “Henry!”

I struggled out and chased after her, not even bothering to close the door. I caught her just before she could tattle on me and gently covered her mouth with my hand. “Waylan is just going inside. She’s excited to put her new BB gun in our room so she doesn’t lose it. Because she could lose it so easily. Isn’t that right, Waylan?”

She huffed when I let go of her mouth. “Yep. Right.”

I chanced looking up at Henry and saw he was staring down my shirt. A flash of heat burned through me.

“Mom said bitch!” Waylan cackled and took off running into the house, screaming all the way. “You said it, Mom! You can’t take my gun away!”

“Who the hell gave you a gun?!” Seth’s deep voice boomed through the house and then he joined us on the porch. “Who gave her a gun? Are they fucking nuts?”
