I leaned in. “A favor.”

“Just spit it out, Mills.” Tate grunted and crossed his arms.

“Y’all are living with Nellie. You see her more than we do. I know you think I’m an asshole but I’m worried about her. I need her to be safe.” He looked like he was trying to grind his teeth into dust. “We need you to keep an eye on her. Just make sure she’s safe and that the kid’s well cared for.”

Seth gripped the arms of his chair hard. “You think she’s not taking care of her kid?”

West scowled at the back of his brother’s head. “No, that’s not it. That kid is a fucking soldier for her mom and it’s clear Nellie loves her.”

Tate pinched the bridge of his nose. “He meant to let us know if the kid needs anything. We just want to make sure they have everything they need.”

Seth looked like he was working an idea over in his head before he sighed and sat forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “I ran a background check. The couple she lived with after she left here recently died and left her everything they had. She just sold the house and a commercial garage for a pretty penny.”

West smirked. “Seems like all of our sisters are doing well for themselves.”

“Who were they?” Mills looked like he was starving for the information.

Anger had me standing. “If you want to know, talk to her. She’s your sister. You should be having this conversation with her, not us.”

He stood up, too. “I can’t talk to her. I’m… It doesn’t matter. We’re just not meshing right now. I just want you three to stick close to her and keep her out of trouble. It seems to follow her.”

Woodrow shrugged. “It’s not exactly a hardship. She’s nice. Waylan is a fun time, too. You’re missing out.”

I almost felt bad for the three of them for a moment. They looked crushed. It was clear they cared about Nellie but it seemed like none of them had an idea about how to be caring big brothers.

“We’ll figure it out with her. In the meantime, just watch over her for us.” Mills ran his hand through his hair and sighed. “Please.”

Nodding, I cut them some slack. “We’ll stick close to them and make sure they’re safe.”

West narrowed his eyes at me. “Not too close.”

“We’re not losing another sister to a harem of assholes. This shit has to end. I’m starting to think this family is fucked up.” Mills glared at us. “If the three of you want to go find a naïve woman to screw together, do it outside of my family.”

I grunted. “We don’t do that.”

Woodrow slowly smirked. “Yet.”

Seth threw his hands in the air. “If I don’t get voted Sheriff over these two, this town is going to go up in smoke.”

“Just take care of them.” Mills left with his brothers and then it was just the three of us sitting there.

I wasn’t completely sure but I felt like we were all thinking about the same thing. A reverse harem. The three of us with one woman. Without a doubt, I knew who we’d all been thinking about. Nellie Hellstone. I’ve never considered sharing a woman and I’d never even had a threesome, so I wasn’t sure why theidea was suddenly banging around my head like a toddler with a set of pots and pans but it was.

Seth cut me off as I started to open my mouth. “No. Don’t go there.”

“So, we are all thinking about the same thing.” Rolling my shoulders, I stopped and cracked my neck. “Well, shit.”

CHAPTER 15

Nellie

I ran into Mills outside of Steve’s. I was going in for my first day of work, even though I was only planning on working half a day so Ms. Vivian didn’t feel stuck with Waylan. Seeing my big brother caused a mix of emotions to whirl within me. I remembered being a little kid, running to Mills so he could pick me up and spin me around. Part of me still wanted that. I missed being his little sister. I was just so angry, though. He’d been so cruel to me and it felt like I was staring up at our parents when he looked at me with those angry, judgmental eyes.

“Where’s the kid?” Mills crossed his arms over his chest and stood with his legs braced wide apart in front of me. It was a power pose I’d seen our father assume too many times to count.

“The kid? You mean Waylan? Your niece? She’s with Ms. Vivian.” I nodded to Steve’s shop, making the poor decision to share more than necessary with him. “I’m working half a day with Steve.”

His face twisted into a scowl. “What? Why? If you need a job, the ranch could always use help. You don’t need to play grease monkey anymore.”
