“Yep.” Looking up at me, Waylan smiled. “Come on, Mom. I didn’t get you anything sweet because we have cookies at home.”
My heart grew larger in my chest at how brave and strong my little girl was. “We have chips at home, too, but I see you bought some for yourself.”
I navigated around Mills and was almost past him when his giant hand snapped out and caught my elbow. His eyes were narrowed on my wrist. I sighed and pulled my arm away. “Ask them if you’re curious. I’ve got cookies waiting for me at home.”
CHAPTER 11
Woodrow
I watched Nellie leave and then turned on Mills. “You think you could try not being an asshole to her for five minutes? She was only here because we were getting her statement and photographing her wrist. She was attacked by some piece of shit who followed her from Arkansas.”
Mills’ face went dark. “Did you catch the bastard?”
Seth nodded. “He didn’t get a chance to run. Nellie clocked him with a wrench.”
“He’s here?” Raising his voice, Mills went for the back of the station, where the cells were. “Motherfucker. Why did you bring him here? My family, my responsibility, my chance to serve up consequences.”
Henry grunted. “Could’ve fooled me.”
I stood next to Seth with my arms crossed over my chest, blocking the cells. There was nothing I would’ve loved more than allowing Mills to beat the shit out of our prisoner, but we were going to be better than the previous Sheriff.
“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?” Mills stared at Henry, both men the same size so I wasn’t sure who I’d put my money on to win the fight. Henry had years of fighting dirty in biker gangs but Mills was farm tough. It was a toss-up.
“I’ve seen you interact with your sister twice and both times you treated her like shit. Doesn’t much seem like family.” Henry kept his fists at his side but his body was tense, ready for the fight.
“You don’t know a fucking thing about what happened with our family so mind your goddamn business.” Mills cracked his neck and took a deep breath. “Is this guy going to be an issue?”
“Nope.” I tried to reconcile the man I’d witnessed risk life and limb to save Vera with the cold man in front of me who seemed to genuinely hate Nellie. “Areyougoing to be an issue?”
Mills let out a dark laugh as he backed away. “Fuck you.”
Seth waited until Mills stormed out of the station, to whistle. “And I thoughtyouhad family shit, Wood.”
I snorted. “Can’t have family shit when you’re on a different continent and they’ve all vanished.”
“I can’t imagine what she did to deserve that level of bullshit from her family.” Henry rolled his shoulders and moved us into the office. “She’s a good mom, she’s kept that giant ass cat alive for what looks like a hundred years, and she knows how to change her own oil. Seems like you could do worse for a sister.”
Seth shuddered. “That cat can’t be right. Cats aren’t supposed to be that big. I left my door open for two minutes last night when I ran down to grab a bottle of water and when I got back, he was in my bed.”
“Seems the cat and the kid are both comfortable with rough looking assholes.” I paused. “How’d you get the cat out?”
“I didn’t. It took up half the bed until I finally fell asleep and then it screamed in my ear until I let it out.” He rubbed his hands down his face. “I should’ve arrested Nellie for disturbing the peace.”
Like an asshole, the idea of putting Nellie in cuffs got a reaction from my dick. Groaning, I leaned forward in my chair and shook my head. “We need to find somewhere else to live.”
“We? Jesus. Have we just committed to the idea of living together now? Like some fucked up version of theGolden Girls?” Henry looked between me and Seth and groaned. “Guess I’ll just say goodbye to getting laid now.”
“Don’t blame us for that.” I glanced at the doorway like I’d be able to summon Nellie back. “If you’re not getting your dick wet, that’s on you.”
“And you have been? Getting your dick wet?” He raised his eyebrows. “And before you answer, remember I’ve lived with youfor coming up on a year and you’ve been in my face the entire time. I feel like I would’ve noticed you fucking.”
“Aw, you would’ve noticed me? That’s sweet.”
He threw a pen at me. “Fuck off, asshole.”
I grinned. “So, none of us are seeing any action. That’s what we just established, right?”
“I heard there’s a club a few towns over. It caters to the BDSM community but anyone’s welcome.” Seth sat back in his chair, his face a mask of blankness. “It’s pretty popular for hookups.”
