He let out a raucous squeal of delight.
Logan chuckled. “I think he’s gonna like it out here.” Carefully, he wiggled Liam out of the wrap and unzipped the feet of his footie pajamas.
Baby clothes that unzipped from the bottom were the best.
We kneeled at the crossing of wet and dry sand, and waited with bated breath as Liam curled and flexed his little toes.
As soon as he realized how cold the sand was, he squealed, then paused. His dark eyes were serious as he took another little testing squish in the dry sand. A gurgling coo slipped out of his mouth.
“There it is,” Logan said with a grin.
We were cliché first-time parents, making little imprints in the sand with Liam’s feet and taking pictures to document his first trip to the beach.
It was peaceful, something that was certainly fleeting. Soon, wedding plans would ramp up as we got closer and closer to the big day. Liam would start crawling, and the baby proofing would have to begin. I would go back to work and the “new normal” would get even newer.
But little moments like this were my heaven; the reminder that the best things in life happened when you least expected them.
“Whatcha thinking about?” Logan asked as he got Liam snuggled back up in the baby carrier.
“Huh?” I said, blinking away the haze.
“You just had that look on your face that you get when you’re thinking about something. Everything okay?”
“Yeah,” I said as I wiggled back into my flip flops. “Apart from my overpacking, this was a good outing.”
“Hey, look at me,” Logan said as he caught my chin with the crook of his finger. “I love how much you care and how much thought you put into making sure Liam always has everything he needs.”
“I know,” I said as I dug my foot into the sand. “I just feel stupid because I packed all the?—”
Logan shut me up with a kiss. “You should have stopped with ‘I know.’ Because you’re a good mother, and the best partner I could ask for.” He pecked my lips once more. “And we love you.”
BONUS EPILOGUE
LOGAN
“You ready?” Will asked as he pinned the boutonniere to my lapel while a photographer snapped away.
I took a deep breath and tried not to look as uncomfortable as I felt. There were too many people around. Kylie had pulled out all the stops for the big day, and it was...a lot.
“Yep.” I clipped.
“You look like you’re going to throw up,” he said as he slid the floral pin through the fabric of my suit.
“I feel like it. Don’t stab me.”
“Is Logan in here?”
I immediately forgot the photographer and turned at the sound of Erica’s voice. She had kept Liam at her house for most of the day so his routine and nap schedule was as normal as possible. If she was here, that meant?—
Liam’s scream nearly shattered the chandelier in the suite.
“I’m so sorry,” Erica said as she bounced Liam on her hip. “He woke up from his nap and kept asking for Mama. I know it’s earlier than the ceremony, but he’s nearing the point of no return and Leah’s having her portraits done.”
The poor little guy was beet red and angry as hell.
“I figured seeing you might help him settle and then I can walk him around the hotel until it’s time for the ceremony,” she said.
“Come here, big guy,” I said as I picked up Liam and held him in one arm.
