“This is just for you, Shifter King. You allied with the wrong vampires. Break your alliance with Balthazar Rossi and the Originals who follow the Vampire King and his son, or we will continue killing your kind until there are none left. I realise my brethren have failed to wipe out your Canadian pack—for now, but while they regroup, just sit back and enjoy the show.”

Two masked vamps approached Shane. Owen growled and snarled. “Don’t you fucking touch him again, you fuckers! I’ll kill all six of you in this cave, and the rest out there!” he yelled looking directly into the camera.

The two vamps held Shane, one pulling his head back as another approached. The top part of the vamp’s face was covered, but his fangs were free and lowered. We all watched in silence as he struck at Shane’s neck, latching on even as Shane growled and swore. He fought, but it was useless and within seconds the Alpha of the Canadian pack hung limp. One after the other, the vamps took turns in drinking from him until he was deathly pale, his eyes closed. They pulled back from him, their faces covered in his blood.

“Don’t touch him?” The voice said smoothly. “Then how about you? Will you taste as good, I wonder? Well, let’s find out. Then your King may begin to understand that unless he breaks ties with the one who has condemned our kind, he will lose all of his brothers very, very soon, not just his Beta, or an isolated pack in the middle of nowhere.”

The video finished and a blast of air hit me.

“I will return as quickly as possible.” And B’nar disappeared.

“Fuck. Fuck. Fuck!” hissed Lionel, kicking the bottom step of the house.

Dragging air in through my nose, I stared at Lucas. “Shift, now.” And I sent a wave of compulsion over him. His bones cracked and he snarled as he shifted back until he was standing naked in front of me. “Do you know anywhere around here where there are caves?”

Lucas frowned. “No. I’ve been here for a couple of years and have even been on guard duty. I don’t know anywhere other than the town caves.”

My heart sped up, adrenaline fuelling my dread. “Nowhere?”

Lucas shrugged, his face screwed up in thought. “No.”

The fences. The open gate… “Shit!” And I began to run towards the town cave.

Chapter 18

Selina

“Let’s get you home,”Zander said kindly, repositioning Devon in his arms.

The fact that he was a demon still bothered me a little, but right then I was too worried about Owen and Becca, and too exhausted, to let it bother me too much. My distrust of him was irrational, I knew that, but I couldn’t seem to help it.

I shook my head. “No, I need to at least find Becca.” I refused to accept that my friend might be gone. “And I can't rest, not until I know Owen is okay.”

Zander sighed and gave me a sideways glance. “Rawson ordered you to rest.”

I raised my chin stubbornly. “He did. And I will, just as soon as I know what’s happened to the people I love.”

Zander’s lips twitched in a smile. “So his compulsion doesn’t work on you?” he asked carefully.

I snorted. “Don’t worry, he’s not mate material for me. As an alpha, I’m just not as easily compelled to follow his instructions. I will rest, but it will be when I choose to do so.”

Zander chuckled. “Fair enough. So you’re saying it'd be pointless, me taking you home, because you won’t stay there?”

My deep breath was shaky. “I’ll stay there if we find Becca’s gone back there. If not, no.” I didn’t want to think about what could have happened to my friend. I stole a look at Devon. “You don’t know where Becca is do you, sweetheart?”

“No, Momma. So-wee.”

“It’s okay, honey. Don’t worry, we’ll find her.”

We walked in through my broken front door and my heart began to pound. “Becca! It’s me. Where are you?”

Zander put Devon down and they held hands, following me from room to room. No Becca. I shivered. Cold sweat covered my palms. I refused to believe anything had happened to her, just the same as I refused to believe Owen was anything other than alive and well. But something told me he wasn’t. My wolf whined, agreeing with me.

Wiping my palms down Rawson's t-shirt, I turned towards the door, panic gripping me. “I need to go. He-he’s not okay...”

Zander stood in front of the door, his face uncompromising. “Nope. No way am I letting you out there alone again. When Owen gets back, he’ll kick my ass if I do.” His face softened. “Selina, he’s strong, and Rawsonwillfind him. Hell, Owen's probably recovered and already on his way back to you.”

I rubbed my face, trying to get a grip on my fear and frustration. He was right, Owen was strong, his wolf would heal him, and there was no reason to believe those vamps had gone back for him. Devon pulled his hand from Zander’s and slipped his fingers around mine. “Momma stay?” His little eyebrows dipped and he looked so anxious my chest squeezed tight.
