“I don’t know. It’s possible he was embarrassed about it. He was proud and wanted everyone to think he was powerful. I guess he wouldn’t have wanted anyone to know that he needed a loan.”
“But who could that other family be?”
“No idea.” Adriano groans. “I thought going through all this would give me answers and not uncover more questions.”
His phone buzzes, making us both jump. He quickly glances at the screen.
“Fuck,” he mutters. “I have to go.”
“Why?” I watch him in surprise.
“My men potentially located Matteo. The tech team was able to track down a phone signal and discovered an old safe house that Gennaro abandoned a long time ago. It would make sense if Matteo was hiding there because no one would think about it. I have to go check it out.”
“Can’t your men do it?” I don’t want him to go anywhere, especially anywhere close to Matteo. “How did they find it all of a sudden? What if it’s a trap?”
“It’s going to be fine, and I’ll be careful. I promise.” He gives me a quick kiss and hurries to the door.
I lower the contract and sigh. Being married to amafia boss is never easy, is it? And loving him is even harder because you never know when he’ll have to run off into danger again.
But Adriano knows what he’s doing, and I know he wouldn’t do anything to put himself at risk. He wants to be here with me and my babies, and maybe after tonight, Matteo will finally no longer be a threat to us and we can start planning our future.
I don’t want to have to hide in a safe house all the time. I want to be able to go out, visit my parents, and return to my neighborhood. It’s been a while since I spoke to my mom and dad for longer than five minutes.
I take a deep breath and slowly release it. Everything will be fine. I have to stay calm for my babies. Maybe I can distract myself and go through some more contracts. Gennaro might have struck another deal, or maybe he wrote down which family he really took that loan from.
But it’s hard to keep my thoughts off Adriano. With every second that passes, I miss him more.
CHAPTER 22
Adriano
My men shake their heads. The house is empty. The only thing left to check is the basement, so I wave at them to gather in front of the door. It’s locked, and the keypad was destroyed, so we have to use force to bring it down.
It takes a few minutes, but then we’re racing downstairs. I stay a little behind, because no matter how much I’d like to be the first one and lead my men, I need to be careful. Leaving my wife and my children on their own isn’t an option, so I owe it to them not to unnecessarily put my life at risk.
Surprised gasps sound as we reach another room, and then the horrible stench hits me. I know what it is. Decaying bodies.
As I cover my nose with my shirt, even though itdoesn’t really help, I stride forward. Bodies lie everywhere, and there’s a whole lot of blood.
It looks like the dead men were guarding or watching someone. There’s an open cell behind them, and there’s blood all over the floor, but no body. I don’t see Matteo anywhere. Did he do all this?
“Who are they?” I ask Federico, who I only took with me because he might be useful.
“They worked for your father, and then for Matteo.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Let’s go outside.” There’s nothing for me to see, and I need some fresh air.
Once Federico and I are upstairs, I take a deep breath.
“So you’re saying these guys worked for Gennaro first and then for Matteo?” I ask.
“Yes. Your father hired them first, but they were his secret hires. I was overseeing them. Then he ordered them to protect Matteo.”
“And Matteo agreed to that?” I raise an eyebrow at him.
