Ah. The fun is over. Now that he’s seen one, he won’t rest until he finds the others. He’ll know Chiara was kidnapped.
“Fuck!” Adriano stares right into the camera. “How the fuck did you miss that?”
The camera goes black. I can’t see Adriano on any of the other cameras, but I can hear him shouting in the distance. He’s furious. Good. Maybe he’ll get reckless and pull some ridiculous move that will puthim at my mercy. The more desperate he is, the better for me. Then he’ll agree to just about anything to get Chiara back.
I’m not surprised. The idiot threw himself in front of actual bullets to save her. That was why I was so sure he knew about the twins, but he’s never mentioned them so far. Not even once. There’s no way he wouldn’t have said something about them.
“There’s more! How is it possible that you didn’t see any of this shit?” Adriano roars at his men as he smashes another one of the cameras.
I laugh.
His men got too comfortable. I’d been watching them for a while, and I could tell exactly when they lowered their guard because they thought no one would disturb them. That neighborhood is like that. It’s so peaceful and boring that it lulls you into a false sense of security.
Or maybe Adriano knew my father wouldn’t let me go against him when he was hurt. If the roles were reversed... I don’t even want to think about it because I know what would happen.
But I’m done with my father. I’m sick and tired of listening to him and hoping he’ll finally see me. Really see me. All he cares about is his precious Adriano.
All the cameras are now dark, and I turn off the screen. Now I have to deal with Chiara and see how Ican use her. But she’s easy to control. All I had to do was point my gun at her stomach and she was ready to do whatever I wanted. That won’t change.
Things are finally going perfectly for me. It’s time for a change anyway. Adriano’s time has run out. It’s my turn now, and I’m going to play some more games with him.
I spread my lips into a smile.
I’ll feed on his suffering and pain like a vampire.
CHAPTER 3
Adriano
The pressure in my chest is growing stronger. Getting shot didn’t hurt this much.
They kidnapped Chiara. Someone took her right from under my nose, and I don’t understand how it could’ve happened.
Or maybe I do.
I was an idiot. I should’ve upped all the protection without worrying about what the neighbors might think. We should’ve turned this house into a fortress. I should’ve known Gennaro and Matteo would figure it out anyway.
But there’s nothing I can do now. It’s too late to change anything. Someone has Chiara. My men are looking everywhere for her, but I fear it’s all going to be for nothing.
Gennaro and Matteo aren’t idiots. They’ll keep her somewhere safe, and they’ll try to get me to do whatever they want.
And right now, I’d do anything. I’d agree to anything just to have her back. What’s the point of having all the money and power when I don’t have her? She’s not by my side, and I feel like half of me is missing.
All of this should disturb me. The old Adriano would’ve scoffed and thought how pathetic all of this was.
But I’m not that Adriano anymore. My priorities have changed. I swallow hard as I send a message to Gennaro and Matteo. It has to be them behind all this. I don’t know why they haven’t contacted me yet with their demands, because I’m sure they have them.
No one else would’ve dared to come anywhere near me. No one else could’ve known I’d been shot. It has to be Matteo or Gennaro, or both of them together.
What the fuck are they waiting for? Why haven’t they called me yet? Every second that passes is pure agony because I don’t know if my wife is all right. I don’t think I’ve ever been in so much distress over something. It all feels new to me, and it’s terrible.
I’ll kill them all. I’ll kill them all for making me feel like this. Chiara must be terrified. After everything that happened to her because of me, she has to gothrough this too. Gennaro and Matteo have to pay for it. I don’t know how I’m going to do it, but I have to.
If they’ve done something to Chiara...
I tightly shut my eyes and rub my forehead. The mere thought of something happening to her while they were kidnapping her makes me both nauseated and furious.
She has to be alive. They have no reason to kill her. Without her, they have nothing. They know I would burn the whole city to the ground.
