“Autumn. You’re still the same person you were. Now, please tell me more about what’s going on.”

“Grier once told me that if he was captured, incarcerated, he would be murdered while being held.”

Nolan stepped into the kitchen. “All the more reason we need to get on top of this. You ready?”

“Go.” Tanya pushed Autumn toward the door. “I won’t let the party get out of hand.”

Autumn rushed out the door and climbed into Dad’s old Ford.

Nolan got in too. “Party? What party?”

“A few friends from town are showing up. Tanya brought food.”

She floored it out of the driveway and down the road and was heading to Grier’s cabin when she remembered the image Tanya had printed. Holding the steering wheel, she stretched her legs and reached into her pocket to pull out the paper. She tossed it to Nolan. “That’s the fugitive who was impersonating Agent Knap.”

“I’ll take a picture of it and send it to the contact I just spoke with and let them know.”

“What about the Alaska State Troopers? Can you update them on what’s happening? Tanya said her cousin flew the helicopter that delivered me to Skagway, then stopped at Juneau. They could still be there. Let’s not let them escape by boat or air or road. They’re not going to leave this state with Grier.”

“I’ve been keeping my superior informed, and the information is being passed up the line. Troopers are looking for the fugitive impersonating Agent Knap. It’s probable the deputy US marshal has also been impersonated. I’m sending the images now, or at least when you stop. I can’t take a picture with all this bouncing around.”

Autumn accelerated through town. Flashing lights and a siren behind her drew her attention to the mirror. “Oh, for crying out loud. Is that Craig? He’s going to pull me over?”

“Let me handle it,” Nolan said.

“I’m not stopping until I get to the cabin.”

Nolan touched her arm. “Autumn, just stop the truck. This will go a lot easier and faster if you do.”

She pulled over to the side of the road.

“Stay here.” Before she could argue, Nolan hopped out and rushed around the truck to Craig.

Their voices rose, and she reached for the handle and barely opened the door.Should I?Nah.

His face red, the new Shadow Gap police chief, Craig Atkins, threw his hands up and went back to the Ford Interceptor she used to drive. Man, she loved that vehicle.

Nolan jogged back around and got in.

“Let’s go.”

“What? Just like that?”

“You’re wasting time. Let’s get to the cabin.”

She steered back onto the road. “Am I okay to speed?”

“Yes.”

“What did you tell him?”

“I told him I was given a tip that I need to investigate. Official Alaska State Troopers business.”

“Oh, is that all?”

Nolan laughed. “And I told him to back off. I know things about bribes and the review board.”

“Wait. What?” Autumn almost steered right off the road and had to correct the truck. “What are you talking about?”
