He ran a hand along her back, savoring the feeling of her relaxing in his arms.
“I figured if he could move on, so could I.”
“Is that why you wouldn’t even let me mention us continuing to see each other? You thought I would be seeing other women along with you?” He snorted, then raised her chin again so he could meet her eyes. “Listen, the women I’ve messed around with weren’t my girlfriend or anything. They knew what they were getting into. It was for fun. Nothing serious.”
“I’m not looking for just fun, casual sex, Jaxon. I want more.”
Her admission took his breath away. Was he seeking more? He knew without a doubt he was. Something in him had changed. One-night stands were no longer appealing to him. He wanted to wake up next to the same woman every day. He wanted to experience life alongside someone who made him smile, challenged him, kept him aroused.
“So do I.” He lifted her hand from his face and brought it to his lips. He pressed a kiss to it and offered her a wide grin. “Let me take you out. A good ol’-fashioned date.”
She blinked, staring at him before a smile lit up her beautiful face.
“You better be on time. I want to be wined and dined. And I don’t want to be taken somewhere you’ve taken one of those—”
He swooped down and captured her lips again to quiet her. Sofie didn’t know what was in store for her. When he wanted something, he put his mind to it. She’d better hold on tight.
Jaxon Keith was officially pursuing her.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to take you home, baby?” her father asked.
“Don’t worry, Dad. I have a ride home.” Sofie gave her father a hug as they stood next to his car. Her mother was already in, sitting in the passenger seat.
“Well, all right. Don’t forget we are going to grill out at the house next weekend.” He pressed a kiss to her forehead.
“I should be able to make it.” She laughed.
Her father loved cooking out, and his grilling was infamous. He slid into the car and gave her a wave. She spun around and walked a few rows over to an expensive sports car.
Jaxon leaned against it, waiting for her. Alana’s party was beginning to wind down. She hadn’t driven this morning when she and Alana had gone to breakfast and the beauty shop to get their hair done. London had gone all out for Alana and had them chauffeured in a luxury limousine. She at first was going to spend the night in one of the guest rooms, but she’d changed her mind when Jaxon had offered to take her home.
“And whose ride is this?” She hefted her purse on her shoulder, folding her arms in front of her. She eyed the vehicle and knew it would be too costly for her nurse salary. She kept forgetting the Keith brothers were loaded. Their business was definitely booming by the looks of his ride.
“Mine.” Jaxon’s cocky grin spread wide. He pushed off the car and moved to the passenger door and opened it for her.
She raised an eyebrow and ambled over to him.
“What?” he asked.
“Nothing.” She slid into the supple leather seat and exhaled.
He shut the door and came around to the driver’s side. He got in and shut the door. They were basked in darkness. The scent of real leather and new car assaulted her.
“So you keep cars here, but you don’t live in Cleveland?”
He turned the engine on and maneuvered it through the row of cars parked on the lawn. With the amount of guests that had showed up for Alana’s party, everyone had parked in the large yard in front of the mansion. Soon, Jaxon had guided the car onto the paved driveway and headed toward the road.
“Well, I was staying at London’s old condo until he decided to sell it. I didn’t have much here since his place was furnished. So when he sold it, I just moved my things to their house.”
“And you hadn’t considered moving here, or is LA your home?” she asked quietly. This question had popped into her head the second he’d shared with her that he was interested in more. The butterflies in her stomach fluttered. Could she do a long-distance relationship? California and Ohio were not close at all, and the time difference could be brutal.
“I’ve considered it. Ohio is definitely much cheaper to live than LA. With the office there, London and I have always rotated between here and there. LA is exciting, but it can get old quick,” he said.
“I’ve only been there once,” she murmured. She turned in her seat slightly to face Jaxon. His dark hair fell forward toward his face. Her hand itched to push it away from his forehead.
“Maybe one day I’ll take you,” he replied. He glanced over at her.
Sofie’s core clenched at the heated look he sent her.
