“Come here, Wescott,” Murry barks.

Sidling up to him, he nods to one of his nurses. “Start cauterizing the blood vessels.”

If this were any other situation, I’d be irritated that he’s treating me as if I’m beneath him. But this is too important for that.

Taking up the cauterizing tool, I start tying the blood vessels off, while Murry confers with the orthopedic surgeon who willbegin shaping the rest of Enzo’s soft tissue into a stump. That part of the procedure is over my head, so when I’m done with my task, I move back and let the experts finish the surgery.

“Go give James an update, and text Rose to find out how Roman’s doing. Also ask James to track down some coffee. We’re in for a long few days.”

“Yes, sir.” Kail gives Enzo one last look before leaving the operating room.

Turning back to watch the rest of the surgery, I begin making plans in my head for getting him home as soon as possible, because like hell do I trust anyone outside of my staff to care for him.

The things money can do.Forty-eight hours after Enzo’s surgery and everything’s been a whirlwind of conferring with Enzo’s doctors, and figuring out how to turn my unused sitting room into a medical recovery room.

“I didn’t give you permission to take my patient.” Murry glowers at me as I sign the paperwork needed to transfer Enzo to my house.

“Considering he’s my patient, I don’t need you to. Don’t worry, you won’t be held liable for anything that happens once he’s no longer under your care; which won’t be an issue because, contrary to popular belief, I know what I’m doing.”

“He just went through major, life changing surgery, Wescott?—”

“Don’t talk down to me.” Looking up from my paperwork, I glare at the man. “I know what I’m doing. I am perfectlyequipped to take care of him. He will have the best medical care there is, and I don’t know why you feel the need to question me.”

“Your back alley clinic and your ties to the Amatos are legitimate concerns.”

I laugh humorlessly. “I’ll remind you once more, Aidan, that your sister wouldn’t still be alive without me and my Boss’s interference.” Cristian doesn’t care what happens to people outside his organization, but when someone like me, who has his complete trust and loyalty, asks him for a favor, he doesn’t think twice about granting it.

Helping Aidan Murry was never on my to-do list, but I also couldn’t turn a blind eye to the abuse his sister was suffering. That help didn’t come with no-strings-attached, though. In turn for helping him and his sister back then, now he can turn a blind eye while I break Enzo out of this hellhole.

“After this, we’re even,” he hisses through clenched teeth.

I smirk. “For now.”

He ignores me and jerks the paperwork from my hands, signing his name on the forms and then shoving them back at me. “I’ll get him ready for transport. And if something happens, it’s going to be your ass on the line.”

“Good thing I like a good pounding then!” I grin at the look of utter disdain on his face.

Everything moves fast after that. The ambulance we’ve commandeered for this transfer is being driven by James, while Kail and I sit in the back with Enzo.

“This is not a good idea,” Murry reiterates as he stands near the open door of the ambulance.

“Your opinion has been noted and tossed into the fire,” I say cheerfully.

The glare I get before James shuts the doors makes me cackle.

“Can you not be an evil bitch right now?” Enzo says in a raspy voice.

I check his vitals and lines as James gets the ambulance moving. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. How are you feeling?”

“Like I got crushed by a car,” he responds.

“Any pain? Did Murry give you meds? He said he was going to.”

“I’m fine, Doc.” He tries to shift and winces. “Well, not fine, but the pain doesn’t want to make me cry, so I’ll be fine for a while.”

“Let me know if that changes.”

Enzo closes his eyes, and while his expression doesn’t smooth out, it’s not etched in pain, so I let him be the entire ride to the house.
