She’s suspiciously quiet. Her eyes are glassy.

Shock?

I rub Robyn’s shoulders, dropping a kiss onto the top of her head.

When Shay continues to pace, Eden straightens from his post by the door.

“Sit down.” Eden wraps his arm around Shay’s shoulder and guides him to the closest seat.

Shay’s still vibrating with energy, tapping his foot.

“Mike is an amazing doctor, just like Code is a seriously strong swimmer.” I don’t let any of them see how freaked out I am. “Coach was lucky to have them both right there.”

“CodesavedDad,” Robyn whispers. “After everything, he was the one who dived in and…”

My brow furrows.

What does she meanafter everything?

I don’t know what happened on the yacht but I have the feeling that it was much bigger than simply a man falling overboard.

“He’s a hero,” Eden says, firmly.

“Too right.” Shay finally smiles. “He should get some kind of medal or something for saving our coach, right?”

“Code’s never been on a boat before.” Robyn’s voice is wet with tears. “But he knew just what to do. I fucking froze, and Michael can’t swim. It was Code who took charge without any hesitation. If Dad hadn’t been drinking, he’d have been able to hold onto the flotation ring that Code threw to him. You should have seen how Code dived in to rescue Dad.”

“But why would he?” Eden shoots me a complicated look that I don’t understand.

Shay gives his brother a startled glance. “Don’t say shit like that.”

Eden doesn’t appear repentant.

I nearly had a heart attack, when Michael called me on the way to the hospital. He sounded calm like always, but I could hear the panic underneath his tone.

He was in shock. I could tell.

He spoke as if he was relaying the news to his colleagues about an accident that had happened to strangers. It must be a coping mechanism that all doctors use. He explained that coach had fallen into the lake.

Then that Cody was also being taken to the hospital because he’d dived in to save his dad.

I hug Robyn more closely to my chest. “Do you want another coffee?”

Robyn shakes her head.

Her hands are still clenched around the first mug of by now cold coffee, which she’s been clutching onto like a lifeline for over an hour now.

Gently, I take the mug from her and place it onto the floor. “Do you want to talk about it, principessa? It’s fine if you don’t.”

Something bad happened on that yacht.

I can sense it in my bones.

Robyn fiddles with the edges of my coat, pulling it more closely around herself to sniff at the collar. I don’t know whether it’s to block out the stink of disinfectant or because she finds my familiar masculine scent reassuring.

“Eden is allowed to ask his question,” she says, quietly. “Did Code risk his life because Austin is his dad? Does being a biological parent mean that you can doanythingto someone, and they just have to take it?”

Dread churns in my guts.
