I returned my attention to Eve, never removing my eyes off the road. “So you are knocked up again.”

I didn’t even bother framing it as a question.

“Why do you assume that?” she asked instead of answering. “Maybe I’m just sick.”

I rolled my eyes at her secretiveness. “Yes, you are sick because you are knocked up,” I told her, chuckling.

A sigh left her lips.

“Please don’t say anything,” she pleaded. She took a sip of water and even in the dark, she seemed to look green. “I want Lachlan to know first.”

“If he hasn’t figured that out by now, I’ll have to think my cousin is an idiot.”

Though you were never sure. Lachlan knew he wanted Eve the moment he spotted her. Yet, he walked away from her after their first bump on the road. But they worked it out.

When she remained quiet, I continued in an easy tone. “Good thing I’m pregnant too. We can have babies together.”

Her head swiveled my way so fast, I thought she’d make herself sick again. “What? How long?”

“About three months.” Daniel and I were ecstatic about it. He wanted a big family, and so did I. I loved the idea of us growing old together, surrounded by our children and grandchildren. So we better get to working on that right away.

“Why aren’t you sick?” Eve asked, a slight envy in her voice. I couldn’t blame her with her constant nauseousness.

I shrugged my shoulders. “Lucky, I guess.”

“I’m happy for you.” She reached over and gently squeezed my hand. “And I am thrilled we’ll have our little ones close together. I love that we are family. And Elise is going to spoil them all rotten.”

I laughed, nodding my head in agreement. “True.”

Elise was her sister, and Eve adored her. Elise pretty much raised Eve and after meeting their mother, I considered Eve lucky that she had a wonderful sister like that. Ever since Eve and Lachlan got married, Elise and her husband came often to visit.

We pulled up in front of my cousin’s castle and Eve leaned over to give me a peck on the cheek then rushed out of the car. Before she slammed the door, she said, “Text me when you get home.”

I nodded and the moment the car door was shut, I rushed out of there.

When I finally got home, the castle was quiet. But I knew Daniel waited for me. He always waited for me. I passed by my mother’s room and heard her snoring. I chuckled to myself. I went to Bram’s room next. He slept sprawled all over his bed, his blonde hair a mess. Somehow Bram flourished around Daniel. They spent a lot of time together - salmon fishing, playing rugby, soccer, and learning Highland games. In the latter, there was a lot of Google and YouTube involved. Mother and I enjoyed watching them hassle through it.

Before I entered mine and Daniel’s bedroom, I sent off a quick text to Eve to let her know I got home safely, then entered the room and threw my phone on the table. The shower was running and without thinking twice, I stripped out of my clothes, one piece at the time.

I could see the outline of my husband’s strong body through the glass and my insides clenched with need. Despite his hard upbringing, he was beautiful on the inside and outside. It was what made me love him so much.

“Are you going to join me, Nightingale?” His voice was a deep, soft invitation.

I opened the shower door and stepped in. Wrapping my arms around him, water cascaded down both of our bodies.

“How are you feeling?” he murmured against my lips. “And how is our baby?”

His hand came down between our bodies and he placed it on my belly.

I smiled at his tender touch. “Baby is doing well, still growing. I am feeling wonderful.”

I closed the distance, pressing a soft kiss on his lips. “I missed you all day.”

“I missed you more.” His hands on me felt like heaven. He reached for the sponge and poured soap on it, then slowly dragged it across my breasts, under my arms, then down my stomach.

Then he started washing my hair, and I groaned with how good it felt. “Ohhh, Daniel. I think you missed your calling.”

He chuckled and the rumble came from deep inside him, warming my heart. I loved hearing him laugh, it was a sound that left his lips more and more.
