“I love you too,” I whispered back, my voice shaking with emotions. “If you leave, I’ll follow.”
Chapter Twenty-Six
Six Months Later
The weather today was perfect. The clear blue skies and the sun high above us, shone our way to the church on McLaren’s property, where generations of our ancestors had married before us. Including Lachlan and Eve.
The church had always seemed so magical. When I was a little girl, I dreamt of a white wedding to a man that would love me, protect me, and always stand by my side. And I’d do the same for him. And now, surrounded by ancient trees and ghosts of all our ancestors watching in awe as I recite my vows, I know I have gotten my wish. Daniel was all that and so much more to me.
I had never thought it would happen. Daniel was dark and dangerous but he was mine. He might have done plenty of wrongs, but he also has done many rights.
A stone pathway led to the church entrance where everyone waited, but only one man mattered and one boy. Bram was a ring bearer and would be waiting for me alongside Daniel at the altar. My two most important men in my life.
Lachlan squeezed my hand, sensing my nervousness. “You look beautiful,” he said softly. “Just like you said you would when you were a girl. Like a princess.”
I choked out a laugh. “I can’t believe you remember that.”
“I do,” he admitted with a smile. “And I also remember how you insisted your husband would be a perfect balance of good and badass.”
I took a deep breath. Who knew I’d be so right! Because Daniel Carrington was the perfect man, my dream-come-true prince. He had darkness in him, but I wouldn’t change a single thing about him. I loved him just the way he was.
“Ready?” Lachlan asked.
“Yes,” I breathed happily. “Always ready for Daniel.”
The church filled with Wagner’s “Bridal Chorus,” signaling our entrance. We walked through the church entrance and everybody turned to look at us. My mother’s eyes welled with tears, and I smiled. It was all she ever wanted, for me to find the love she had with Dad.
And then I saw Daniel, standing dark, tall and imposing in his tuxedo, Bram right next to him wearing a matching tuxedo. I had never seen anyone else wear it better than these two men, my two loves.
Daniel’s eyes locked on me, drawing me to him. A wide smile beamed on my face, I didn’t need a mirror to know it. The whole ceremony was a blur because all I could see was Daniel and my son behind him. My whole world was right here.
I am marrying Daniel Carrington.
There were no words adequate to describe all the feelings brimming inside me. The whole ceremony was a blur, till the priest pronounced us husband and wife.
“You may kiss the bride.”
Daniel’s towering frame felt like protection. Bending his head down, he pressed a soft kiss on my lips and the world turned just a bit brighter.
“I love you,” I murmured against his lips.
“And I love you, my little Nightingale.”
Epilogue
Fifteen Months Later
“Oh, shit!” Eve muttered and I knew what was coming. I pressed the brakes and pulled over just in time to see her shuffle out of the car then puke her guts out.
“Damn it, Eve. Again?” I complained teasingly. It didn’t take a genius to know what the deal was. My cousin’s wife was knocked up… again. And I couldn’t be happier for them. I loved them both, they were family.
She groaned but continued emptying the contents of her stomach. I felt bad for her. She had morning sickness with her twins, but this time around seemed even worse. She eased up slowly, grabbed her traveling toothbrush and quickly cleaned out her mouth. She was definitely prepared for puking.
She sat herself back in my car. “All good now,” she murmured. “Keep on driving.”
My lips curved into a smile, but it was too dark for her to see it. It was past ten o’clock at night, and we were driving home from Edinburgh. We could have spent the night in the hotel, but the truth was that neither one of us could wait to get home. We were coming back from her book release party under Callen’s publishing company in Edinburgh.
No, not Callen’s. It was mostly Liberty’s publishing company.Sometimes it was easy to forget, even after all this time. Bram was part owner, but obviously he was too young to do anything with it, and I knew nothing about the business. So I asked Liberty if she could manage it, and Daniel would manage Bram’s part of the ownership.
