“No. It’s his,” she gestured at Matteo’s lifeless body, frowning. Then she spat on it.
“We’re definitely keeping her,” AK commented with a laugh.
I looked down at her and smiled. “Yeah, I think I’ll keep her.”
Apache came over with Raleigh and Jameson. They were covered in blood and dirt, and Apache had taken a few bullets, as well. “You okay, Dixie girl?” Apache asked, leaning on Jameson.
Dixyn looked at her family, her eyes widening as she noticed they were all there for the first time. “How did you …?” she trailed off in confusion, brows furrowing.
A lopsided grin tipped Apache’s lips as he nodded toward me. “Bullet here came for reinforcements.”
Dixyn darted her eyes to me, then back to her father. “And you came?” Her voice cracked.
Apache’s grin fell, and he frowned. “Of course, baby girl.”
Dixyn hesitated a few seconds before rushing over to her family, and they all enveloped her in a group hug.
I couldn’t help but smile. I’d felt like shit since causing the rift between them, even if it had brought us closer together.
When they pulled apart, Dixyn came back to me and helped hold me up again. I held her tight against my side, not wanting to ever let her go.
As if I didn’t have enough surprises that day, Apache limped over to me and extended his hand. “Thank you for saving my little girl.”
Blinking in shock, I slowly took his hand and shook it. “Thanks for having our backs.”
Apache nodded. “We’re gonna head back. See you on the other side.”
Dixyn said her goodbyes to her family as I talked with the guys. “Any baggage we need to deal with?” I asked.
“Nope,” AK said. “Kojack, Hook, and Ajax are tying up loose ends.”
“Good. Did we lose anyone?”
Cowboy’s face hardened as he nodded. “We lost Deuce. A couple Forsaken, too.”
“Fuck,” I cursed. “Make sure we get his body. We ain’t leaving it here to rot with these wetbacks.”
Dixyn came back over to me, which immediately brightened my mood. “Hey, kitten.”
“Hey.” She frowned as her eyes darted between my wounds. “You really should see a doctor.”
I scoffed. “I’ll be fine, babe. Don’t worry.”
“Well, at least let me have Meghan look at you. She's a nurse.”
I smiled down at her. “I love you.”
Her head whipped up toward me, her gaze meeting mine. She stared at me for several seconds, tears in her eyes. “You mean it?”
I tucked a strand of her wild hair behind her ear. She was a fucking mess, covered in blood and dirt, and it made me love her even more. “Yeah, kitten, I do.”
Eyes watering, she smiled. “I love you, too, old man.”
I chuckled, happier than I'd ever been even with three bullets in me. I draped my arm around her shoulders. “Let’s go home.”
