I flopped back down on the bed with a smile. I hoped that the interview meant things were looking up for me, and I finally felt like I was moving forward with my life.
I started to daydream a little. Maybe I could go back to school after I established some stability. I didn't want to wait tables forever, and I wanted to make something of my life. Journalism was my second love after acting, and I could definitely see myself working in that field. I could start at the community college in Laughlin, then transfer to a university in Henderson or Las Vegas, which were both about an hour and a half away.
My grin spread wider as I made plans for my future in my head. I'd felt lost for so long, and it was good to feel like I was getting back on track.
I sent a text to Nina.
Me:Hey I got an interview today. Cross your fingers for me :)
A few seconds later, she replied.
Neenz:You got this, girl :)
I decided to be proactive and look at classes at the community college for the fall semester. It was a few months away, so I told myself that was plenty of time to get myself together and prepare.
After I researched the English program and financial aid options, I felt even better. I could get an associate's degree in English, then transfer my credits to a university to finish out my bachelor's degree.
I couldn't help but smile.
You can do this.

My interview went so well that I was offered the job on the spot. I was ecstatic and called Nina as soon as I left the casino.
“Hello?” she answered after a couple of rings.
“I got the job!” I practically squealed.
“Are you serious? Yay!” she cheered.
I was so happy I could burst. “Yes. We need to get the girls together and celebrate!”
“Yes, girl, yes. I don't need an excuse to party.”
I giggled, giddy with happiness. “Now I can finally move on with my life without Ma—” I covered my mouth, stopping myself.Shit.
“Without who, Dee?”
“No one. I gotta go. I'll text you later,” I blurted out in a rush, anxious to get off the phone after my blunder. I didn't want to drag my friends into my past, and there was no point in talking about Matteo since he was ancient history.
A couple of seconds later, I got a text from Nina.
Neenz:You still good for tonight?
Shit, I'd forgotten about the waitressing gig. Even though I'd just secured a job, I needed as much money as I could get if I was going to move out on my own and go to school.
Me:Yes, what time?
Neenz:Be at my place at 6
Me:K :)
After confirming things with Nina, I sent a group text to the girls about the good news and planning for the celebration began.
Meghan:Where do you want to go?
One placed popped in my head, and it was probably the worst idea ever, but I couldn't help myself.
