"I can't ask Lisa to pick up and leave Cold Spring," I say, realizing the decision has already been made. "She just started this new business—she’s excited about it, and it’s thriving. I’m at a point in my life where I can live anywhere I want. I want to be here—with her, Lily, and my grandchild. I’ll move."
"Good," Aaron smiles. "Sounds like you have it all figured out."
"So I have your blessing?" I ask, feeling hopeful.
His smile is genuine, instantly easing my mind. "You’re asking me for my blessing?" he asks, his surprise evident.
"Your blessing matters to Lisa, so it matters to me."
He raises an eyebrow and extends his hand to shake mine. "You have my blessing, Mateo. Congratulations."

When I step into the house, the rich scent of coffee, bacon, and maple syrup fills the air. Lisa is at the stove, flipping pancakes.
"Good morning," she says, turning to face me. "Are you hungry?"
"Yeah, I’m starving," I reply, my gaze lingering on her lips. "Can I have a kiss?"
She steps close, leaning in with her lips puckered and eyes closed. I kiss her gently, savoring their sweetness. "Is that syrup I taste?"
"These pancakes are homemade," she says with a smile. "I had to conduct a quality assurance test."
"Come here, hermosa," I whisper, reaching for her and wrapping my arm around her.
"What?" she asks, looking up at me with a spatula in hand. "I thought you were out for a run. You look good and smell like heaven."
"I showered at the gym," I say, holding her gaze. "Now, I want you to explain the love hormone to me."
"What?" she chuckles.
"How long have you known I’m in love with you?" I ask, pulling her close.
"Since the last time you were here," she says, her arms sliding around my neck.
"When, exactly?" I press.
"When you and Lily walked in after she picked you up at the airport," she murmurs. "You gave me a look, and your eyes had never looked bluer."
"So you psychoanalyzed me."
"Yes," she admits.
"Isn't that cheating?" I tease, nuzzling her neck.
"That’s why it hurt more when you left."
"Can I make it up to you?"
"You can try," she replies with a smile.
I slip my hand into her hair and claim her mouth in a slow, all-consuming kiss. I love the way she melts into me, surrendering completely in my arms. I kiss her until we’re both breathless. When she opens her eyes, they’re dark, like the deepest hues of a morning dawn sky.
"I love you too," I murmur against her lips.
"I didn’t say anything," she teases.
"Your eyes tell me everything I need to know," I whisper into her ear. "You’re head over heels in love with me."
