“Keith.”

“Well, Keith, we’ll leave you to sort out all your friends here,” Jax said. “Sorry about the mess.”

Jax started to pull her towards the door.

“Is that it?” Hugo asked.

Jax stopped and looked back.

“Why? Do you want me to kill you, too?”

Hugo quickly shook his head.

“Okay then, I have things to do.”

She didn’t need to guess what those things were. She wanted to get close to Jax, too. She wanted him to soothe her. To love her as only he could.

Jax took her hand and ran down the main road towards the forest. When they just passed the tree line, he turned around and backed her up against a tree trunk. His mouth crashed into her, and the fire that had been missing when their bond broke consumed her.

There was no need for Jax to prepare her before he hooked her leg around his waist and bent his knees. And then he swiftly entered her without releasing her mouth.

Just like before, she felt Cain, and she felt Nia. Two wolves that lived for chaos and darkness. Perhaps it was fate, after all, that nothing could break their bond.

Chapter 78

“What’s this?”

Jax looked at the envelope in front of him with the Circle’s seal. The last time he received one of those, they’d summoned him and Layla to stand trial.

He looked up at Hugo, sitting at the end of his conference table with Keith and frowned. If they thought they could punish him for defending his pack, they could think again.

“You’re not going to sit at my table and tell me that piece of shit deserved to live, are you?” he growled.

Hugo shook his head.

“No, of course not, Your Majesty,” he said. “That’s just a formal apology from the Circle, acknowledging our mistakes. And we’d like to welcome the Queen and her family into your pack.”

“They don’t need your shitty welcome,” Ryker snapped.

Hugo flinched and looked at Ryker, who was sitting opposite him. Out of everyone, the Alpha of the Night Walkers was the least agreeable about the new partnership. If anyone knew how to hold grudges, it was Ryker. He wouldn’t be surprised if he managed to string one of them up in his basement.

“I agree. I don’t trust you. You find three red wolves, and suddenly, you’re bending over backwards for us,” Brax stated.

“More like letting us fuck them however we want,” Ryker grunted.

Chase chuckled as he took the envelope and opened it without permission. When Cole had been alive, that would have been a wrong move. All such letters used to have a dose of black magic, and if anyone other than the intended recipient tried to open the letter, they got a nasty surprise.

“What, and a ball in their honour, too?” Chase asked.

Cain immediately went on full alert. It had only been a few months since Nia returned, so the over-protectiveness was still an issue.

“No chance,” he said quickly. “Now tell me what I want to hear.”

Hugo sighed and pulled out his paperwork. It wasn’t the end of the matter. Hugo had a massive boner for Layla even before the events of that night. He wanted to know everything about her.

“You were right. No one had seen Cole shift. He never ran with his pack; out of all the branches, his team had the most contact with witches,” Hugo confirmed. “The same covens that helped the Hunters. We detained his second and third, and theyadmitted they knew what he was doing but kept out of his way because he promised them safety.”

“I knew that piece of shit was a traitor,” Dylan growled.
