“You just want to get me on that bike,” I murmur, low.

“You have no idea,” he growls, his hand sliding down to the small of my back.

“Rook, we need to talk.”

If I could roll my eyes any harder...

Fucking Esmerelda.

Wolfe mutters a curse, turning just in time to see Esme storming towards us, her dark hair flying behind her, those eyes full of rage. I know it’s because he’s with me, and honestly, I’m done caring. After the last few days, her feelings mean little tome. I go to step away, not wanting the drama, but Wolfe takes my hand and pulls me to his side.

He’s choosing me.

He’s making sure we both know it.

My heart swells, and I hold his hand tightly as Esme stops in front of us. Her eyes scan the two of us and her face contorts with a rage that would scare most. Luckily, it does little to frighten me. I’m curious as to why she’s here, and I can feel the tension in the air, thick and suffocating, as she takes a deep breath and blurts out, "Wolfe, I'm pregnant."

The words hang in the air, heavy and shocking. My heart skips a beat, and I glance at Wolfe, trying to gauge his reaction. His expression remains unreadable, but I can see the flicker of disbelief in his eyes. I hold my breath, not sure I’m really hearing this. Is Esme pregnant? No, that can’t be. It would ruin everything.

My heart sinks, and I keep my eyes on Wolfe, praying this is all a bad dream.

Wolfe releases my hand and crosses his arms, his voice calm but firm. "Prove it."

Esme hesitates, her bravado faltering for a moment and by her reaction alone, I know he has caught her off guard. She wasn’t expecting him to question her. "I... I don't have the test with me right now, but I swear—"

Wolfe cuts her off, his tone sharp. "I'm not stupid, Esme. You think you can just say something like that, and I'll believe you without proof? Prove it. Right now. I will send one of my men to get a test.”

Her eyes widen, and her head shakes a little before she stops it. She’s lying. I can see it written all over her face. I don’t know what happened between her and Wolfe when I was gone, but it’s clear that he must have ended things with her and she has come back, desperately trying to keep him.

Esme's face flushes with anger and embarrassment. "How dare you...”

“How dare I what?” Wolfe growls. “Demand to see it with my own eyes. You either go and get a test to prove it, or you get out of my compound and don’t come back.”

Her mouth opens and closes. She’s truly stunned. “You can’t do that...”

Wolfe's gaze is steady, unwavering. "I can andI will. If you can't prove it, then you're lying. Now, leave."

Esme's eyes dart between us, her desperation written across her face.

“Wolfe...” she tries.

“We’re done, Esme. If this is true, you will prove it. I’m giving you one minute to decide before I haul you out myself.”

“Fuck you,” she spits, “I can’t believe you’re picking that...bitch.”

“Leave.”

Her lips form a tight line, and she mutters a curse, before turning on her heel and storming out.

I’m certain it won’t be the last time we hear from Esme, but right now, nothing can take away from the fact that Wolfe just made it clear that I’m the one he wants.

For the first time, he put me first.

And nothing has ever felt so good.
