We both sigh when I settle us in the water and flip the faucets off. She leans into my body, and I hold her against me. My phone starts ringing, but I ignore it until it goes off again.

“Stay here, jellyfish, I’ll be right back.” I get out of the tub, grab a towel off the heated rack, and head toward the room where my phone is on the nightstand. “Yeah,” I bark, pissed that we were interrupted.

“It was a setup. Leif and Rogue have both been shot. Leif might not make it, man.” Browser’s voice cracks. “I tried to stop the bleeding. It was like Deere,” he continues. “Commander says, ‘All hands on deck.’ Go get your man.”

“How bad is Rogue?”

“She’s in pain and hurting but cussing and complaining. Leif is in surgery.”

“I’ll secure Franclynn and head out.”

“Okay.”

I hang up and drop my head. I say a silent prayer to a God that I know shouldn’t help me that my friends live through this.

“Is everything okay?” I hear her voice and turn to see her standing there. I can’t lie to her again.

“I’m going to have to leave. There was an incident, and both Leif and Rogue were shot.”

“What? Let me get dressed.” Franci moves to her clothes.

“No, baby. You have to stay here. I need to know you are safe so I can do what I’m trained to do.”

“I need to get to the hospital so I can be there with Ley. I wasn’t there the last time, and I need to be there this time.” She sobs. “I have to, Gavin.”

“You can’t. You have to stay here. They are out there looking for you now.”

“Then use me as bait to get them out in the open.”

I stomp toward her. “Never. You could be carrying our baby right now, so I’m not letting you out there. Give me some time, and I’ll be back for you.”

“You promise?”

“I do.” I kiss her long and deep and help her into bed before I get dressed.

I look down and watch as she restlessly moves, trying to relax. I hand her the glass of water in my hand and don’t tell her I crushed one of her sleeping pills into it. I need to make sure she’s safe. I already checked that it would be safe for her to take if I by chance knocked her up the one time we made love.

She takes the cup and drinks it all down, unaware of what I’ve done.

“I love you,” I tell her as I kiss her softly.

She realizes what I did as she starts to drift off as I finish getting ready.

“Gavin,” she says my name drowsily, and her lids close.

I walk out, knowing I’ll scorch this earth for her.

CHAPTER 10

FRANCI

Icome awake feeling rested but angry. I can’t believe he drugged me. Checking the time, I realize it’s almost noon. I slept through the night. I walk out and look for a phone or something. Noticing clothes in the closet, I put on a pair of jeans that fit perfectly and a soft-blue sweater. As I dress, I reflect on everything he’s done for me. I love him and want to be with him, but he can’t rule everything and tell me what I will and won’t do.

There’s a slight ache in my leg. I looked at the area before I got dressed. I found a small needle mark, but I know that’s not how he got me to sleep, so I’m not sure what it is. It’s time for me to get answers.
