She’d made no move to want to go further. I could tell by the look on her face, the fact that we’d done this again after swearingwe hated each other, was freaking her out. So, I suggested we go back to the party.

We couldn’t have been in that room for longer than ten minutes.

She’d needed my help pulling the zipper of her dress back up, all the way – and she’d barely been able to stand, using the frame of the bed for support.

When she uncrossed her legs, only to switch them, her thighs were still shaking.

I licked my lips, still tasting her.

My hand itched to touch her again, still feeling her tight ass squeeze around my thumb.

A couple of minutes later, I spotted Zach exiting the same hallway I’d gone down with Natalia. Except, he wasn’t alone. Behind him, two of his soldiers – Sebastián and Joaquín, who happened to be brothers – followed behind, both carrying a large duffel bag together. Money? Drugs?

When I scanned the party again, I saw Zach was one soldier short.

After walking them to the elevator, he came back to where we were on the couches. He took a seat on the edge, right by Maria, throwing his arm around her.

Sat on the adjacent edge, to his other side, one of my eyebrows raised slightly when Maria didn’t push him away, but instead almost…Relaxed?Into his side.

“Losing focus, I see,” I spoke low enough, only for him to hear me.

His jaw clenched, turning away from the conversation with Gìovanni and some other Cosa Nostra men, to look at me. “At least I went for it.”

My eyes darted to Natalia, and my own jaw clicked with tension. Why couldn’t I go for it?

Mine and Zach’s situations weren’t so different. Maria didn’t want him, and Natalia didn’t want me. However, that didn’t stop him from making Maria his anyway.

So,whydid I refuse to take what was mine?

I fucking knew why.

The past was a dangerous thing. A constant reminder that shewasa Moretti.

I couldn’t fucking trust her, no matter how bad I wanted to.

“¿Lo mataste? Eso es demasiado incluso para ti. Apenas la tocó.”

I almost laughed at the way he looked at me – both confused and curious as to how I knew what he’d done. Of course, I knew Sebastián and Joaquín had carried out a body in that gym duffel bag.

“Les hice saber a mis soldados que ella estaba fuera de sus límites. Él sabía lo que estaba haciendo.”

And right again; he was, in fact, shorter a soldier than at the beginning of the night.

The morning after Francesca’s nightclub opening, I’d met with Zach, and he’d told me the truth about Maria. How she was the assassin that tried to take him out almost three years ago in Mexico. The assassin he’d been searching for non-stop like a maniac ever since.

The only problem? She had no idea who he was. Didn’t remember.

It was why I’d started asking Natalia questions about her childhood best friend. They’d grown up together in a Bronx orphanage after all. Natalia must’ve known something. And I was proven right when she and Kali spoke openly about Maria’s ex-career because we were all from the same world.

I stole another glance at them – seeing how unguarded Maria was around Zach. Relaxed into his side… His arm around her shoulders…

Two things I knew in that moment.

Hewasin love with the girl.

And shewouldtear his heart apart.
