“Talk? Are you kidding me right now?”

“Yeah. Why? You had something else more important to do?”

She looked at me, her anger mixing into something I couldn’t place. She lowered her eyes, shaking her head. “You don’t get to do this,” She said quietly, barely audible over the music. “Not anymore.No.”

I leaned in until there was barely any space between us. “You’re out here with some guy’s hands all over you, andIdon’t get to do this?”

She lifted her chin defiantly, her eyes cold and hard as steel. “I’m allowed to dance, Trevor. Or do you think you’re still the one that gets to control me?”

I stepped closer, crowding her space, nodding as I spoke. “Damn right, I am.”

Her pillowy lips parted with an incredulous scoff.

The way she looked at me…

Defiant. Angry. Unyielding.

It stirred something primal inside me – something I couldn’t shove down – no matter how hard I tried.

I knew she could see it in pitch-black eyes.

“Trevor,” She warned, her voice dropping with unease. “Walk. Away.”

“Not. Happening.”

When she didn’t back down either, I reached for her arm, my grip firm but not rough, dragging her off the dance floor before she could object.

“Let go of me!” She snapped, struggling against my hold, but I didn’t stop, pushing us through the crowd with single-minded determination.

“Let go of me, you caveman!” I pulled at my hand, stumbling over my feet in my platform stilettos as Trevor pulled us deeper into one of the guest rooms. “You don’t get to manhandle me!” I hissed, yanking my wrist free.

Trevor turned to face me, so abruptly, I almost walked straight into his chest. “Maybe I wouldn’t have to if you didn’t keep fucking pushing me.”

“What is your problem?” I was so angry, I was shaking. “We’re not together! You don’t get to act like the jealous boyfriend anymore!”

Before I could react, his hand was around my throat, squeezing as he pulled me into his hard torso. “Do you need another reminder of your birthday, amai?”

I didn’t think.

I slapped him.

My hand connected sharply with his cheek, my palm stinging.

He let go off me – more out of anger than hurt – taking a single step back to keep his cool.

“You’ve changed…” He chuckled darkly, rubbing the spot where I hit him.

“Ihavechanged. I found myself. I thrived and glowed after you.” My breathing shook. Tears burned in my eyes. “I grew wingswithoutyou.”

“I’ll crush your fucking wings.” Trevor’s gaze darkened as he took a step into me.

“Fucking. Try. Me.”

He cocked his head, something almost sinister passing through his onyx eyes. “You think I won’t?”

I knew he’d try.

I wouldn’t let him hurt me this time.
