ATHENA

My fingers pause on the keyboard when Kashton’s voice enters my head.

Athena, my goddess, can you hear me?

Kash? What’s wrong?

Is your stalker there with you?

Yes. Why?

Ask him if he would be willing to do me a favor? There’s a seriousness in his tone.

“Raph? Kashton is asking if you’ll grant him a favor?”

Raphael tilts his head. “What does he want?”

He’s listening, I say to Kash.

Ask him if he’ll use his powers to take a witch into The Dragon’s Lair in the secure part.

I ask Raphael.

He gives me a curious look. “When?”

“Now.”

Raphael disappears before my eyes.

He’s on his way, Kash.

Are you all right with him?

I am. Don’t worry about me. Everything okay with you?

For now. Things are about to get hairy though. Stay safe.

You too.

Worry clogs my throat, but I keep my fingers moving over the keyboard, scanning the information. With Raphael gone, I have a few minutes. I move as quickly as I can, file after file. I can speed read, but I feel like I’m still going too slow.

A few minutes later, Raphael reappears.

“Everything okay?”

“No. Things have escalated. We have to finish this before the power goes out for the whole strip. I don’t think the generators will kick on again. There’s a good chance they’ll be destroyed.”

“What’s going on out there?”

The building rattles from something that sounds like an explosion. “Raph?”

“It’s full blown chaos out there. We need to hurry.”

I nod and get back to work knowing that I’ll be able to help more when I get this piece done. I feel Raph’s eyes on me on and off as I work. I ignore him the best I can.

I wish I knew how to reach out to Kashton telepathically to check on him, but it’s probably best I don’t bother him anyway. I don’t know what he’s in the middle of and I certainly don’t want to distract him at an inopportune time.
