He kneels down and lifts me into his arms. A moment later, a blanket is thrown over my body. Oh right, I’m naked now. That’ll take some getting used to.

Kash carries me down to our rooms and lays me on the bed. “You need to rest, but first you need to eat something. It’ll help you feel better.”

My stomach growls right on cue. I burrow down into the covers and curl up in the fetal position. That’s when the memories of Grey ripping into my throat comes back to me. I jerk up into a sitting position.

“Whoa, what’s wrong?”

“Where is Grey?”

Kashton growls low in his throat before he responds. “The fucker got away.”

“Did we lose anyone?”

Kashton sighs. “We’re not sure. Everyone is accounted for except for Krystana and Declan. We can’t find either of them. Mayor Smith said that Krys followed a truck that had a dragon in a cage. She thinks that it was Declan. She had one of her guards follow after her, but he never caught up to the truck and he never saw my sister once she fell from the sky.”

“Oh no, Kash. I’m sorry.”

He shakes his head, misery etched on his face. “We’ll find them.” He says it, but I’m not sure he believes it. “This is war and there are always casualties.”

I lay back down unable to hold myself up. I feel so weak and tired. Silence drifts in around us. Kashton lays behind me, holding me until there’s a knock at the door.

“Thank you, Jonathan.”

“Anything for Miss Athena.”

It was his voice I heard on the roof when I woke up. I smile a little.

“All right, my goddess, you’ve got to eat.”

It takes everything I have to sit up. I pull the blankets around me like a little nest. All of my favorite foods are stacked on the tray. I lunge for the French toast first, not even bothering to use a fork. I dip it in the maple syrup and eat one piece in about four bites. Soon, there’s nothing but carnage and crumbs left behind from the probably seven course meal of steak, eggs, pancakes, cream cheese danish with cherries, and coffee to wash it all down with.

Still I feel ravenous. “I feel like I’m still craving something.” It’s not hunger, but my mouth feels dry like I’m parched.

Kash holds up a glass of red juice. It smells divine, like fruit and pastries or maybe it’s ice cream and butter. I take the cup and sip from it. The texture is like nothing I’ve ever experienced. It’s thick and almost sticky, but it tastes remarkable, and I start to feel better. More energized. More sturdy. I finish off the drink and set the glass down.

Kashton is just gaping at me with sorrowful eyes and a worried mouth.

“What’s wrong?” I ask.

“We need to talk.”

“All right. Talk.” I don’t like the sound of this, but I certainly don’t want to drag it out.

“Grey tried to turn you into a vampire.”

I frown and nod. My fingers automatically go to my throat. When I touch my skin, it’s perfectly intact. There’s no bumps or bruises. It’s not even tender. “I remember.”

He nods. “You can’t feel where either of us bit you, because it’s already healed. This is common with vampires being made.”

“But I’m a dragon.”

Kashton sighs and nods again. “You are. How are you feeling now?”

“Better. The food really helped.”

Kash sits down next to me and takes my hand in his. “The food didn’t help as much as the blood. Your color came back almost instantly.”

“What blood?” I’m expecting to see a blood bag and an IV needle stuck in my arm or something, but then my eyes fall on the empty glass of red juice.
